More than 25 years ago, Lorena Bobbitt became the center of a media hurricane after cutting off her husband’s penis in response to years of alleged domestic violence and sexual abuse at his hands. At the time, the story featured the perfect whirlwind of sex, violence, and scandal for any-and-all major media outlets that cared to jump into the tabloid spices of it all. After the press scandals and the photo shoots, the story faded away and was widely forgotten about, the assumption being that Bobbitt was found guilty at her trial.
But she was indeed deemed innocent by her peers due to temporary insanity, and now rockstar filmmaker Jordan Peele is producing Lorena, a documentary series that focuses on the massive media circus that was steeped in misogyny. In the wake of the MeToo movement, Amazon, Peele, and big-name directors are jumping on the project and bringing it into the limelight once more.
Since the fallout of the case, Bobbitt has stayed out of the spotlight. And for many viewers, her story of being in the muck of it all is sure to keep them tuning in. In her own words, Bobbitt “didn’t choose to be in the spotlight.” But as she tells the audience, “now there’s no going back.” You can watch Lorena on Amazon’s Prime Video Now, the full trailer is down below:
