Amazon Releases ‘The Boys’ Spinoff ‘Diabolical’ Trailer; Sets Premiere Date For The Animated Series

Fans of The Boys, a popular superhero television series, will soon be able to watch the animated spinoff of the drama series. Premiering on March 4, Diabolical will debut in its entirety, via Deadline. Amazon Prime Video dropped the official trailer today to offer fans a glimpse of the series.

Diabolical promises to “reveal unseen stories within The Boys universe.” The 32-second trailer quickly sets its tone of an adult animation by beginning with a scene where Laser Baby slaughters five special agents. As it gets bloody, we also perceive some black comedy sense that traces back to its original series. We are yet to see the animated versions of other main characters.

The Boys is based on the New York Times bestselling comic of the same name by Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan). Eric Kripke (Supernatural, Timeless) is the executive producer and showrunner. Premiering on July 26, 2019, The Boys quickly became popular with its unique storyline, humor, and acting. The show pokes fun at traditional views of superheroes and superpowers. The Boys, a group that despises superpower figures, aims to expose the truth about the Seven and Vought, the multibillion-dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and covers up their dirty secrets. The show earned critical praises such as multiple Emmy nominations. Season three is scheduled to be released on June 3, 2022.

“Surprise! We’re almost finished with eight episodes of our animated series, Diabolical,” wrote executive producer Kripke. “We gathered together some incredible creators and we gave them one rule…just kidding, there’s no rules. They blew the doors off it, delivering eight completely unexpected, funny, shocking, gory, moist, emotional episodes. You think The Boys is nuts? Wait till you see this.”

“Expanding the universe of The Boys has been an amazing journey. Fans will get all-new stories, with all the fun and outrageous humor of The Boys that they know and love—plus some great surprises,” said Vernon Sanders, Head of Television at Amazon Studios. “Eric, Seth, and Evan have assembled incredible talent to bring Diabolical to life, and we can’t wait for our Prime Video customers to see this new, wild ride.”

Diabolical features eight 12- to 14-minute episodes that each tout their own animation style. Amazon Studios, Sony Pictures Television Studios, Titmouse, Kripke Enterprises, Original Film, and Point Grey Pictures serve as production companies for the animation.
