Diabolical promises to “reveal unseen stories within The Boys universe.” The 32-second trailer quickly sets its tone of an adult animation by beginning with a scene where Laser Baby slaughters five special agents. As it gets bloody, we also perceive some black comedy sense that traces back to its original series. We are yet to see the animated versions of other main characters.
The Boys is based on the New York Times bestselling comic of the same name by Garth Ennis (Preacher) and Darick Robertson (Transmetropolitan). Eric Kripke (Supernatural, Timeless) is the executive producer and showrunner. Premiering on July 26, 2019, The Boys quickly became popular with its unique storyline, humor, and acting. The show pokes fun at traditional views of superheroes and superpowers. The Boys, a group that despises superpower figures, aims to expose the truth about the Seven and Vought, the multibillion-dollar conglomerate that manages the superheroes and covers up their dirty secrets. The show earned critical praises such as multiple Emmy nominations. Season three is scheduled to be released on June 3, 2022.
“Surprise! We’re almost finished with eight episodes of our animated series, Diabolical,” wrote executive producer Kripke. “We gathered together some incredible creators and we gave them one rule…just kidding, there’s no rules. They blew the doors off it, delivering eight completely unexpected, funny, shocking, gory, moist, emotional episodes. You think The Boys is nuts? Wait till you see this.”
