Amazon Prime Video has been on a roll for January 20th, for they seem Invincible with their promotional video for that show’s season two release, as well as their season two release of their adult fantasy adventure series The Legend of Vox Machina. After almost a year of waiting, the first three episodes are officially out for everyone to see.
The series was inspired by Dungeons and Dragons Campaign 1 from the comic web series Critical Role. Behind the mic were professional voice actors Ashley Johnson (Teen Titans, Blindspot) as Pike Trickfoot, Travis Willingham (Regular Show, Camp Camp) as Grog Strongjaw, Laura Bailey (Regular Show, Avengers Assemble) as Vex’ahlia “Vex”, Liam O’Brien (Star Wars Rebels, Avengers Assemble) as Vax’ildan “Vax”, Taliesin Jaffe (L.A. By Night, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves) as Percival “Percy”, Marisha Ray (L.A. By Night, Exandria Unlimited) as Keyleth, and Sam Riegel (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Amphibia) as Scanlan.
All of them come from Critical Role and they also voice their respective characters in the Amazon Prime series. This season would also have its fair share of guest stars such as Henry Winkler (Happy Days, Barry), Lance Reddick (The Wire, John Wick), and Cheech Marin (The Lion King, Cars).
Season one garnered massive success as both critics and fans appreciated the fantastical lore behind the series in this scripted format. It follows a group of misfits who are tasked to protect the kingdom of Tal’Dorei from outside forces. According to Variety, “After saving the realm from evil and destruction at the hands of the most terrifying power couple in Exandria, Vox Machina is faced with saving the world once again–this time, from a sinister group of dragons known as the Chroma Conclave.”
It is something special when a series that has not been released yet gets a season two greenlight two months ahead of its premiere. It is telling that now Amazon again greenlit season three months ahead of this show’s second season run. The first season got an outstanding 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.4/10 on IMDb. This most recent season already has great reception with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes for both critic review (Tomatometer) and audience scores. Its first episode rated 9.2/10 on IMDb, its second at 8.9/10, and third at 9.4/10.
Compared with the first season, now these established characters can fit into their roles more fluidly and cohesively. Instead of providing needed context for setting, characters, and world building, the show can pick up right where it left off and bring exciting new adventures to the mix. From what fans already gathered from the first three episodes, this is going to be an action packed extravaganza. As Liam O’Brien points out in the Variety article, “We see this new family tested in the face of insurmountable odds… and what they do to hold each other up.”
The subsequent episodes of season two would release each Friday and on February 10th the last three episodes would air. At this point, fans have many questions about what will happen next to Exandria’s protectors of the realm, especially after that third episode which left eager viewers on the edge of their seat.
You can watch both seasons of The Legend of Vox Machina now on Amazon Prime Video.
