Amazon Orders ‘The Boys’ Spin-off Amid Season 2’s Success

The universe of the superhero satire series The Boys will soon be expanding, Deadline reported today. Amazon has greenlit an, as of yet, untitled spin-off series to follow a new group of superheroes testing their limits in college.

The spin-off series will take a different approach to superhero satire than the main The Boys series. That series focuses on superheroes using their position and power to influence politics and subjugate the people. The spin-off will instead focus on superpowered people learning how to use said powers in a college designed to make superheroes. The new students must battle each other and their own egos and hormones as they compete for jobs and good grades. Deadline described the series as “part college show, part Hunger Games — with all the heart, satire and raunch of The Boys.”

The Boys executive producer Craig Rosenberg (Preacher) had been developing the spin-off for a while before this sudden greenlight. Amazon made the decision in response to The Boys‘ newfound popularity. The premiere of the second season this month was the biggest global launch ever out of all Amazon Originals. As Deadline reported, “in its first two weeks, Season 2 has nearly doubled the Season 1 worldwide audience (+89%), drawing millions of new viewers each week.”

Rosenberg will write the pilot and act as showrunner for the spin-off. He will also executive produce the series alongside Seth Rogen (Superbad), Erik Kirpke (developer and executive producer on The Boys), Evan Goldberg (This is the End), James Weaver (Neighbors), Pavun Shetty (New Girl), and Neal H. Moritz (I Am Legend). Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television will return to produce the spin-off as well.

The Boys is currently airing on Amazon Prime, with the sixth and most recent episode airing on September 25th. The season finale is set to premiere on October 2nd.
