Amazon Orders Episodes of Gillian Flynn’s ‘Utopia’

Screen Rant reported on Thursday that Amazon has added another drama to its roster of original series. Amazon Studios has picked up the series Utopia, a tense thriller based on a British series that aired back in 2013. Gillian Flynn, acclaimed author and screenwriter of David Fincher’s hit film Gone Girl, will be writing the series for Amazon.

Utopia follows the story of a group of friends that comes into ownership of a mysterious graphic novel titled Utopia, which is about a scientist that makes a deal with the devil. Soon after, the group gets into trouble with a strange and shadowy government organization. Amazon has ordered a nine-episode first season of the drama.

As it turns out, Amazon Studios is not the first company to try its hands at producing the series. Utopia has a troubled past: HBO first picked up the series with Flynn as the writer and David Fincher as the director closely following the success of Gone Girl, but the project fell apart in the summer of 2015 when Fincher and HBO could not agree on the direction and budget of the series.

The fate of the drama has been up in the air ever since. Fortunately, fans of the popular British series and Flynn’s work will be able to see the project come to life with Amazon’s decision to produce the series.

Utopia will not be the only Gillian Flynn series to hit the small screen in the near future. HBO will be premiering its drama Sharp Objects, adapted from Flynn’s novel of the same name, later this year at the ATX Television Festival.
