According to the official Curious Hedgehog and Showpath Entertainment press release, the first ever Dungeons & Dragons theatrical production has been announced. It is a collaboration with Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. The show, titled The Twenty Sided Tavern, will be an interactive experience for audiences. Previews will be started at Stage 42 in New York City on Friday April 19th, but the show will officially be open on Sunday, May 5th.
The press release said that producer David Carpenter (PUFFS) stated, “As passionate gamers and D&D players, the partners at Curious Hedgehog set off on a quest to redefine what a live interactive experience can be. What started as a D&D-style RPG onstage with folding tables and a box of props has grown beyond our wildest imagination, from day one we forged a deep connection with gamers and non-gamers alike by bringing them a whole new type of experience by fans for fans. When David Hutchinson at Showpath and the Hasbro team approached us about this collaboration, it was a perfect match. Together we are taking experiential entertainment to the next level.”
During the show, audiences will not just watch but will be able to participate as well, said the press release. Using a software application known as Gamiotics, the audience will be able to influence key parts of the plot. The cast will consist of five actors as well as 30 playable characters. The audience will help the characters solve riddles, puzzles, go on adventures, as well as shape the entire story. There will also be a variety of games including trivia, charades, and beer pong.
The press release cited that no actors have been cast as of yet. However, actors who audition are being encouraged to have knowledge of improv as well as Dungeons & Dragons itself. Those who are familiar are being encouraged to submit their portfolios.
