According to Deadline, Kenan Thompson (Good Burger, Kenan & Kel) has hinted at a potential cast shake-up for Saturday Night Live.Thompson recently told his implications to Page Six, shortly after SNL‘s wrapping of its historic 50th season. The season finale provoked multiple spiraling rumors about the cast’s future, influenced through jokes about Sarah Sherman (Nimona, Three Busy Debra) being forced out and Collin Jost (Tom and Jerry, Fly Me To The Moon) calling for his boss Lorne Michaels (Cone Heads, 30 Rock) to retire so he can run the show
According to Page Six, Thompson spoke at the Reel Works 24th Changemaker Gala. Alluding to the speculated shakeups, he says, “Especially this year where it feels like there’s maybe, possibly, a lot of change next year.” Thompson adds, “You want everyone to stay forever, knowing that people may be making decisions this summer … it’s always like you want your kids to stay young.”
To further the speculation even deeper, Deadline claims that Thompson says he hasn’t even signed his contract for next season. If he is set to depart from the show, he may have had a possible Freudian slip during his recent interview on Today with Jenna & Friends. With guest co-host Bowen Yang (High Maintenance, The Outs), Jenna Bush Hager (Today, Give) reminds Thompson that the iconic Jack Black (School of Rock, King Kong), who hosted Thompson’s debut, will also be hosting the next show. Thompson replies that it has “come full circle,” which could imply that he has now also hosted during his final season. This is clearly speculation, and the actor may only be trying to drum up some attention in the off-season.
Deadline continues to report him as to saying, “You just never know what the future holds. I don’t want to be in the way of someone else or I don’t want to be the stale old man riding the same thing. That doesn’t really happen that much at SNL but there’s no guarantees, I guess,” he explained.
There could be room for a higher-up shakeup, as mxdown has reported, there is a SNL UK adaptation in the works. The series will also feature Lorne at the helm. With his leadership stretched all the way across the pond, the thought of leaving Jost, or even his Weekend Update co-host Michael Che (Top Five, War) in charge during his leave could become an intrusive thought.
