According to Deadline, Aimee Lou Wood (Toxic Town, Sex Education) has received apologies from Saturday Night Live following backlash over a recent sketch that mocked her White Lotus character. The sketch, titled “The White POTUS,” aired during this past weekend’s episode and featured cast member Sarah Sherman (You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah, Nimona) portraying Wood’s character, Chelsea, with exaggerated buck teeth and a caricatured accent.
Deadline reports that Wood responded to the sketch on Instagram, calling the impression “mean and unfunny,” and noting that it felt especially hurtful given her past experiences discussing her appearance—specifically her teeth. “At least get the accent right seriously, I respect accuracy even if it’s mean,” she added.
Wood, who appeared in season three of HBO’s The White Lotus, further addressed the situation by contrasting her experience filming with HBO to the SNL sketch. “@hbo – kind and supportive and never wronged me so leave them alone. @nbcsnl – mean,” Deadline says she wrote in a follow-up post. Despite her criticism, she acknowledged the show’s satirical nature, stating, “Yes, take the piss for sure – that’s what the show is about – but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”
Since sharing her thoughts, Wood said she’s been met with “thousands of messages” of support. “On a positive note, everyone is agreeing with me about it so I’m glad I said something instead of going in on myself,” she wrote.
SNL has apparently taken the criticism to heart. In a final Instagram story update, Wood shared that she recieved “apologies from SNL,” closing the loop on what she called her “rant,” complete with a cheeky filter.
