‘Adventure Time’ Film in Development Alongside Two New Spinoff Series

Prepare to grab your friends and venture to distant lands once more because Variety reports that Cartoon Network has three new Adventure Time properties in development, film adaptation and two new spinoff series. Many details, including casting announcements, are still under wraps, but Variety has confirmed that several Adventure Time veterans are returning to produce the brand new film.

Showrunner Adam Muto (Adventure Time, Steven Universe) is reported to be involved with the new film alongside Steven Universe creator Rebecca Sugar (Steven Universe: The Movie, Hotel Transylvania), who previously received two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for their work as a writer for the Adventure Time episodes “It Came From the Nightosphere” and “Simon & Marcy” and Over The Garden Wall creator Patrick McHale (The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack, Gravity Falls), who also worked as a creative director on Adventure Time‘s first two seasons.

According to Variety, Cartoon Network Studios previously greenlit the spinoff series Adventure Time: Side Quests. The spinoff acts as prequel to the source material and follows Finn as a young child dreaming of epic journeys and battling monsters alongside his best friend Jake the Dog. Unlike the structure of Adventure Time and previous spinoff Fionna and Cake, which featured linear narrative story arcs across episodes and seasons, Adventure Time: Side Quests will be a series of stand-alone episodes following the adventures of young Finn and Jake. This is more in line with the structure of Max’s Adventure Time: Distant Lands miniseries, consisting of four hour-long stand-alone episodes.

The second spinoff series currently in development by Cartoon Network Studios is Adventure Time: Heyo BMO, starring the fan favorite character BMO, who previously had an episode dedicated to him in Adventure Time: Distant Lands in 2020. However, fans can expect a different tone for this new take on the character, as the show is targeted towards a preschool audience and features a new animation style. As reported by Variety, the new series will follow BMO and his band of new friends as they tackle various age appropriate challenges. Adam Muto is set to return for this project as well, joining storyboard artist Ashlyn Anstee (Adventure Time: Distant Lands, Death Budgie).

As fans wait for more news on the film and spinoff series, viewers can dive back into the Land of Ooo and rewatch Adventure Time, which is available to stream in full on Hulu. Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake and Adventure Time: Distant Lands are available to binge on Max.
