ABC Orders Pilot of ‘The Goldbergs’ 1990s Spinoff

Variety announced today that ABC picked up the 1990s spinoff of The Goldbergs.

Currently, The Goldbergs follows the family in the midst of the 1980s, and the show is rife with neon colors and Farah Fawcett-styled hair. The series has enjoyed four seasons since its premiere in 2013, and much of that credit goes to the comedic stars of the show, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Jeff Garlin.

Adam F. Goldberg originally created The Goldbergs and based it off his own personal childhood, but there hasn’t been word yet about the direction the 1990s spinoff will go. Goldberg is also responsible for this new spinoff, alongside The Goldbergs executive producer Marc Firek.

The new series is expected to showcase two high school teachers that become unlikely father figures to the children they teach–of course, while set in the colorful 1990s backdrop.

ABC has been acquiring more and more pilots as time wears on. Variety was also told that ABC is likely not planning on picking up any more dramas, but is expected to expand their comedy pilot order. The network is also considering spinning off another one of their comedy series, Black-ish, which would be a more direct spinoff as it follows Yara Shahid’s character in her journey for higher education.
