Variety has reported that Netflix has partnered with the showrunners of Abbot Elementary, Justin Halpern (Abbot Elementary, Kite Man: Hell Yeah!) and Patrick Schumacher (Abbot Elementary, Kite Man: Hell Yeah!) for a new series entitled I Suck At Girls. The series is based on Halpern’s memoir of the same name. Prolific comedy writer and producer Bill Lawrence (Cougar Town, Ted Lasso) known for his work on Scurbs, Shrinking, and Ted Lasso, will also serve as part of the creative team. The series is currently cast contingent, and a final green light will be dependent on who signs on to the show.
According to Variety, the series will follow three high school sophomores as they attempt to navigate adolescent romance. The source material is based on Halpern’s high school experiences.
Halpern and Schumaker are attached as executive producers via their production company, Delicious Non-Sequitur Productions. Also joining the series as executive producers are Lawrence, Chet Dave, Jeff Ingold (Rush Hour, Ted Lasso), and Liza Katzer (Ted Lasso, Bad Monkey), via Variety.
Variety has reported that Fox initially developed the series as a single-camera ensemble comedy just after the memoir’s initial release in 2013. Christopher Meloni was cast in the series as a father coming of age in fatherhood, as his son did in adolescence.
According to Variety, Lawrence remains attached to the Netflix series because the 2013 iteration, Surviving Jack, was produced by Dozier Productions in conjunction with Warner Brothers Productions. During the Development of Surviving Jack, Halpern and Schumaker’s most well-known work was an adaptation of Halpern’s Twitter feed entitled $#! My Dad Says. Their later work, Abbot Elementary, has achieved both critical and commercial success. Producers for the 2013 series are Halpern, Schumacher, Lawrence, and Ingold. Victor Nelli (The Wonder Years, The Office) took on directing duties for the pilot.
