‘A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight’ Is In The Works

According to Deadline, HBO announced in April of 2023 that another Game of Thrones prequel was ordered, with this one being titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. This particular prequel is based on novellas written by George R.R. Martin. CEO David Zaslov announced that the series is in pre-production at the Warner Bros. Discovery February, 2024 earnings call.

Zaslov, during the earnings call, also claimed that the series will be released in late 2025, said Deadline. With House of the Dragon set to premiere its second season this summer, this will give Game of Thrones fans back-to-back years with the series.

Deadline shared the synopsis for the show, saying that A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Deadline also revealed that Martin will serve as a writer and executive producer for the series. Along with this, some fans wondered why the series will not be called Dunk & Egg like the books, to which Martin explained, “I love Dunk and I love Egg, and I know that fans refer to my novellas as “the Dunk & Egg stories,” sure, but there are millions of people out there who do not know the stories and the title needs to intrigue them too. If you don’t know the characters, Dunk & Egg sounds like a sitcom. Laverne & Shirley. Abbott & Costello. Beavis & Butthead. So, no. We want “knight” in the title. Knighthood and chivalry are central to the themes of these stories.”

Deadline shared that while production was delayed due to the strikes last year, Martin himself confirmed that writing for the first season is “well underway” even after the five month delay.
