The nominees for the 2017 Emmy Awards were revealed this morning in an announcement ceremony led by Veep actress Anna Chlumsky and SWAT actor Shermar Moore, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Westworld and Saturday Night Live tied for most nominations with 22 each. Shows from streaming services, such as The Crown, Stranger Things, and The Handmaid’s Tale, all received an impressive amount of nominations as well.
Comedy series staples such as Veep and Modern Family were nominated as per usual, with Donald Glover’s FX comedy Atlanta enjoying some nominations as well. Television critics have noted the Emmys’ bold choice to nominate several brand new dramas (This is Us, The Crown, The Handmaid’s Tale, Stranger Things, and Westworld) for one of the award ceremony’s most coveted prizes: outstanding drama series. Vox also notes that Netflix has seen a big jump in nominations up from last year: in 2016, Netflix pulled 54 Emmy nominations, while this year, the streaming service garnered 91 nominations. Notable absences include Game of Thrones and the Twin Peaks revival, both of which aired this year out of the eligibility window (shows need to air from June 1, 2016 to May 31, 2017 in order to be considered). Meanwhile, HBO’s critically acclaimed drama The Leftovers, which ended this year, was nominated for only one award. Ann Dowd earned a nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role on the show. Hers is the only Emmy award The Leftovers has been nominated for across all three of its seasons.
Other “snubs” that have been discussed include the lack of nominations for Lena Dunham’s performance in Girls and Issa Rae on Insecure in the Best Comedy Actress category. Shows like Transparent, The Young Pope, Insecure, and Mr, Robot were also left out of major categories. There was one positive surprise in the nominations list, however: Shannon Purser, who plays fan-favorite character Barb on Netflix’s Stranger Things, received an unexpected nomination for guest actress in a drama series.
