After being on the frontline of controversy circulating around mental health for three whole seasons, 13 Reasons Why is coming to close. Netflix announced the series’ final season, which is set to premiere on the streaming service on June 5th, according to Buzzfeed News.
13 Reasons Why is based on the Jay Asher’s 2007 novel where a teenager named Clay tries to piece together what led his classmate and longtime crush to commit suicide. For three seasons, viewers have watched these teenagers’ stories evolve as they cope and come to terms with a haunting truth. In its fourth and final season, the popular and controversial teen drama wraps up the teenagers’ stories.
Netflix gives viewers a taste of what to expect for the upcoming season with the log line: “In the series’ final season, Liberty High School’s senior class prepares for graduation. But before they say goodbye, they’ll have to keep a dangerous secret buried and face heartbreaking choices that could impact their futures forever.”
Though this season is the show’s last, there’s sure to be layers and intense drama to overcome yet again as the characters move on with their lives past high school. Cast members come together one last time for a ten episode season, each set for hour-long runtimes.
Fans will be seeing some familiar faces. The newest season will feature returning cast members, including Dylan Minnette as Clay Jensen, Brandon Flynn as Justin Foley, Alisha Boe as Jessica Davis and Ross Butler as Zach Dempsey.
It remains unknown whether the students will move on without any consequences or will be held accountable for their part in their classmate’s death, but the upcoming season will hopefully answer questions viewers have had since the start.
