According to Deadline, Apple TV+ is sticking with its critically acclaimed spy drama Slow Horses, renewing the Gary Oldman-led (Darkest Hour, The Fifth Element, The Dark Knight) series for a sixth season. This announcement follows the conclusion of season four, with the fifth season already ordered back in January. Based on the popular Slough House series of novels by Mick Herron (Spook Street, Dead Lions, The Secret Hours), the show has been a consistent hit for the streaming platform.
As Deadline mentioned, in the upcoming sixth season, the misfit spies of Slough House find themselves on the run as Diana Taverner, played by Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Random Hearts, Only God Forgives), drags them into a deadly game of retaliation and revenge. The new season will adapt Herron’s novels Joe Country and Slough House, the sixth and seventh books in the series, promising more high-stakes espionage and intense drama.
The Slow Horses series has been praised for its sharp writing, dark humor and stellar performances. Oldman, who stars as the gruff and disheveled intelligence officer Jackson Lamb, has received widespread acclaim for his portrayal, earning BAFTA nominations alongside co-star Jack Lowden (The Outrun, Dunkirk, Fighting With My Family). Additionally, as Deadline’s recent article mentioned, the show earned a Primetime Emmy for writer Will Smith (Bad Boys, The Pursuit Of Happyness, I Am Legend). The ensemble cast has grown over the seasons, with heavyweights like Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Tomorrow Never Dies, The Wife), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Hacksaw Ridge, Mortal Engines), and Joanna Scanlan (Stardust, Getting On, Notes On A Scandal) joining the lineup.
Season four left fans on the edge of their seats when Pryce’s David Cartwright kills an intruder posing as his grandson, Lowden’s River Cartwright, in an assassination attempt. This thrilling moment sets up an even more complex and dangerous storyline for season five, which is expected to arrive in 2025. The plot involves ex-CIA agent Frank Harkness, who is raising infants to become assassins and is expected to carry forward into the next season.
While Apple has previously announced two seasons at a time for Slow Horses, there is currently no word on a potential season seven, according to Deadline. However, given the show’s strong reception, there’s a good chance the Slough House team will continue their missions beyond the sixth season.
As anticipation builds for the upcoming seasons, Slow Horses continues to solidify its place as one of Apple TV+’s most exciting and well-crafted dramas.
