LeBron James, Mike O’Malley, Tom Werner, Maverick Carter (James’ manager) and Paul Wachter are executive producing the comedy series Survivor’s Remorse for Starz.
According to Deadline, Starz officially picked up the series and gave it a six-episode order. O’Malley wrote Survivors Remorse and the series was on the fast-track development and was a front-runner for the Q4 slot that opened in December. Starz pulled its commitment to Sky Atlantics drama series Fortitude allowing Survivors Remorse to take the open spot.
Survivor’s Remorse will debut next fall. The comedy is set in the world of professional basketball and explores the experiences both comical and dramatic that occur when you make it out.
“Ever since I got cut from the freshman hoop team at Bishop Guertin High School in 1980, I’ve wanted to write about my love and hatred of basketball,” said Mike O’Malley. “Starz has given us great freedom to explore an authentic world inspired by Maverick and LeBron.”
The series follows a basketball prodigy, Cam Calloway, who is thrown into the limelight when he signs a multi-million dollar contract with a pro-basketball team. Cam, along with his cousin Reggie Vaughn, goes to Georgia so Cam can start his journey. They must deal with opportunistic family members and their ties to the impoverished community they come from.
“Mike has infused the world of Survivor’s Remorse’ with humor and heart,” Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said. “Along with LeBron, Maverick, Tom and Paul, we feel we really have an all-star team to capture the complexity and comedy inherent to this series.”
