According to Variety, Joanna Lumley was shocked by the script for the final episode of Fool Me Once. Lumley had reportedly never read the book that the show is based on by Harlan Coben. This meant that she was unaware of any of the surprises surrounding the grand finale, which premiered earlier this year on Netflix.
Lumley told Variety that when reading the script with the cast she thought, “My heart was beating so fast, the cast gathered and we were all like, ‘Oh, my God! What do you think of this?’”
The show Fool Me Once, according to Netflix, follows “a newly single mom is grieving her husband when, just two weeks after his funeral, she sees him appearing alive and well — on her nanny cam. Was he actually murdered? Or are there darker powers at play?”
Some critics did not take kindly to the show, said Variety. However, Lumley expressed her opinions as well, saying, “I thought it was beautifully done. And some quite important people have said how beautifully they thought it was made, how skillfully edited it was. And it went along at such a lick that people never thought, ‘Oh, that would be interesting. I can watch another two episodes in three weeks.’ They binge-watched it! If millions of people watch it, I don’t think it’s up to us to patronize them and say they’ve got bad taste.”
Variety also revealed that while fans of the show enjoyed it, a second season is unlikely. This is due to the fact that the character of Maya is dead. Along with this fact, another character named Judith is in prison. These facts would make a second season hard to secure.
Fool Me Once has managed to amass 90 million viewers since its release on New Year’s Day. So far, the series has been shown in 190 countries, says Variety.
