CBS TV Studios is working on a reboot of the 1995 movie Clueless. This spinoff is the second to come out of the franchise. Amy Heckerling, the writer and director of the film, created a show in 1996 that ran for three seasons on ABC but will not be involved with this project. CBS TV Studios now owns the TV rights to the franchise. The reboot will be written by Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey (Will & Grace). Corinne Brinkerhoff ( America Gothic and Jane the Virgin) will be the executive producer.
This new version will be centered around Cher’s ( Alicia Silverstone) best friend, Dionne (Stacy Dash). Described as “Mean Girls meets Riverdale meets a Lizzo music video” by Reddout and Hickey, the show doesn’t seem to be pulling any punches.
News of the Clueless reboot comes with this unofficial description of the show, “a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latté, and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when the high school Queen Bee (Cher) disappears and her life-long No. 2 (Dionne) steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend, all in a setting that is uniquely 2020 LA?”
CBS TV is currently shopping around this project, and will surely not have any trouble selling it. It’s been reported by Entertainment Weekly that there are already multiple bidders for this series.
While this show could land anywhere, it would be no surprise if it found a home on the CW. CBS TV currently supplies the CW with Nancy Drew, Charmed, and Dynasty. The announcement came recently that CBS TV would also be rebooting and developing Walker, Texas Ranger, for the CW as well. CBS TV also has a relationship with Netflix, providing the streaming network with Dead to Me, Unbelievable, and Insatiable.
Safe to say that wherever the show lands, fans of the franchise will follow. Like fans would skip out on a reboot of their favorite movie? As if!
