The game is on! Sherlock is getting a new villain.
Deadline announced today that actor Toby Jones will be joining season 4 of BBC’s Sherlock as a villain. About the casting announcement, co-creator and executive producer Steven Moffat said they are “Delighted to have Toby Jones on board, bringing to life one of [Sir Arthur Conan] Doyle’s finest villains.”
Jones’s TV credits include British series The Secret Agent and Detectorists and Wayward Pines on Fox. He is also well known for voicing Dobby in the Harry Potter films and playing Dr. Arnim Zola in Captain America: The First Avenger.
Which villain Jones will be playing exactly has yet to be revealed. What we do know, however, is that he will be appearing in the second of the three episodes for season four.
So it doesn’t sound like Jones will be the main villain for season four. Sherlock has been very successful with its villains. Ok, it’s had one really incredible villain, Moriarty, whom we all assumed was dead until season three ended with what looked like him coming back from the grave. But then we had to wait a couple years before getting any closer to an answer in the recent Christmas special, “The Abominable Bride.” It is unclear whether or not Jones’s character will having any connection to Moriarty or not.
And we won’t be finding out anytime soon. Although production has begun for Sherlock season four we still have to wait until sometime next year before season four will premiere.
Season four of Sherlock will show Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) back in London despite being exiled at the end of the previous season. He will no doubt be trying to solve the mystery of Moriarty’s video message to him. And John and Mary Watson (Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington) will be welcoming a baby into their small and off-beat family. Sherlock and a baby? Now that’s something we have to see.
Season 1-3 of Sherlock are available on Netflix. The streaming service also recently added this year’s Christmas special, “The Abominable Bride,” which is now available to stream.
