Hulu has canceled Mindy Kaling’s Not Suitable For Work after one season, leaving several of the romantic comedy’s storylines unresolved. According to Deadline, the decision comes two months after the series finished its first-season run on the streamer
Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Not Suitable For Work followed five young professionals navigating their careers and relationships in New York. The central cast included Ella Hunt (Dickinson, Horizon: An American Saga) as AJ, Jack Martin (La Brea, The Today Show) as Josh, Avantika Vandanapu (Mean Girls, Senior Year) as Abby, Nicholas Duvernay (Bel-Air, Purple Hearts) as Kel and Will Angus (Not Suitable For Work, The Buccaneers) as Davis.
The cancellation comes after the two-episode season one finale ended with one major cliffhanger and several smaller unresolved stories. While the series did not become a breakout hit, Deadline reported that it attracted a respectable audience and generated enough attention that Kaling remained hopeful about its future.
As mxdwn previously covered, Kaling discussed the series shortly after its first season and revealed that Not Suitable For Work was originally titled ‘Murray Hill’ before Hulu changed the name. She also spoke positively about the response to the series and the enthusiasm surrounding its cast and creative team.
At the time, Kaling revealed that a writers room had already been assembled for a possible season two, although Hulu had not officially ordered more episodes. “Our writers room has been up for season two, which is wonderful,” Kaling said. She added that she was keeping her “fingers crossed” for an official production pickup and praised the cast and writers for their continued support of the show.
Not Suitable For Work also served as the final entry in a loose trilogy of shows inspired by different periods of Kaling’s life. Never Have I Ever explored the teenage years, while The Sex Lives Of College Girls moved into the college experience.
Not Suitable For Work completed that progression by focusing on young adults entering professional life in New York. With the cancellation now official, the season one finale will serve as the end of Not Suitable For Work, despite its cliffhangers and the creative team’s early preparations for another season.
