Jimmy Tatro (American Vandal, Home Economics) is going gorilla mode for his upcoming role. According to Entertainment Weekly, Tatro has been cast as Gorilla Grodd in the upcoming Superman spinoff series, DC Crime.
Tatro began his career on YouTube, gaining a large following before making his first appearance in Hollywood in 2o14’s 22 Jump Street. Since then, he has appeared in many other roles, such as Dylan Maxwell in American Vandal. Recently, he has appeared in Scream 7 and Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice.
DC Crime follows Superman‘s Jimmy Olsen, played by Skyler Gisondo (Focker-In-Law, Santa Clarita Diet), as he investigates cases of superpowered criminals. The show was created by the same two people who created American Vandal, Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda.
DC Crime will take a different approach from many other superhero spinoff shows by using a documentary style similar to the previously mentioned American Vandal. Grodd, a huge and hyper-intelligent gorilla, will be the focus of the first season.
James Gunn, director of Superman, had spoken on possibly having Grodd in future projects in the DCU, with Gunn saying that Lex Luthor’s smart monkeys had nothing to do with Grodd’s backstory. When asked by Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said, “No, no, no. Because I know exactly what that is. I love Gorilla Grodd, so got other plans for that guy. He’s not a monkey, he’s an ape!”
In DC comics, Grodd is often associated with The Flash and served as an antagonist of CW’s The Flash series.
DC Crime will be streaming on HBO Max exclusively. It begins shooting later this year, with a release date yet to be announced to the public.
