The long-awaited Muhammad Ali series produced by Michael B. Jordan’s (Delphi, Sinners) Outlier Society and creator Ben Watkins’ (Cross, Hand of God) Blue Monday Productions debuted an exclusive teaser on ESSENCE Festival’s main stage in New Orleans. The Greatest will make its global premiere on Wed., November 4, exclusively on Prime Video. View the teaser below.
The announcement was accompanied by a panel moderated by ESPN and ABC News journalist Kelley Carter. Panelists included Watkins, the series showrunner and executive producer, and cast members Dana Gourrier, Amin Joseph, Kai Parham, Michael Ealy, and Jaalen Best, who will portray the titular Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali.
The short preview sees Best (All American: Homecoming) as Clay reciting his goals in a mirror. Flashes of his life — present and future — electrify the screen. Near the end, his normal chanting morphs into the braggadocio affirmations of the iconic Ali.
The series explores Clay’s life in and out the ring, diving into the relationships formed within his inner circle. We’ll witness his career-defining moments as well as his walk into becoming a pivotal figure during the Civil Rights Movement.
In addition to Best, the cast sees Parham (Colin: In Black & White, Encore!) play Rudy Clay, Ali’s younger brother. Ealy (Barbershop, Power Book II: Ghost) is civil rights leader and friend of Ali, Malcolm X. Omari Hardwick (Spell, Army of the Dead) and Gourrier (The Hateful Eight, Django Unchained) will play his parents, Cassius “Cash” Clay Sr. and Odessa “Bird” Clay, respectively. And Amin Joseph is Ali’s boxing rival, Sonny Liston.
Jordan and Watkins produce alongside Authentic Studios, Roc Nation, Polygram Entertainment, a Universal Music Group partner and Grace: A Storytelling Company. Executive producers include Elizabeth Raposo (I Am Legend II, Creed III), Corey Salter (Agent Elvis, Surviving Ohio State), Marc Rosen (Sophie & Sheba, Return of the King: The Fall and Rise of Elvis Presley) and Matthew Gross (Big Sky, Across the Universe).
Additional EPs are Aiyana White (Lucifer, Cross), Jeff Augustin (The Good Lord Bird, Saint X) and Owen Shiflett (Boyhood, Exeter), Michele Anthony (Peral Jam: Let’s Play Two, High inthe Clouds), Boyd Muir (Peter Rabbit, Lil Dicky: Earth), David Blackman (Ice Princess, The Perfect Date), Stegano Agosto (The Fourth Wing, Square Wheels) and Josh Wakley (Motown Magic, Pearl Jam: Retrograde).
