Though Supergirl was not as well-received as the DCU would have liked, they are continuing on with another project many have been waiting for. According to the Hollywood Reporter, a series focused on Mister Terrific is under development, with the pilot set to be written by Alan Heinberg (The Sandman)
Mister Terrific, who was played by Edi Gathegi (The Harder They Fall, Caged) in the 2025 Superman film, was a minor character who became a fan favorite quickly after the film hit theatres. While the Superman follow-up film, Man of Tomorrow, is under production, the DCU is taking the fan favorite character and using them to expand their new universe.
According to Comicbook, the show was originally theorized to be a movie after a copyright was filed for a Mister Terrific film last summer. Heinberg has written for many popular shows, including Gilmore Girls and Grey’s Anatomy, and he has even written comics himself, such as Young Avengers for Marvel. He was also the screenwriter for 2017’s Wonder Woman.
The Mister Terrific show comes after multiple other DC projects have been announced, such as Clayface coming out later this year and a Jimmy Olsen live-action series being in the works. Many of their upcoming projects focus on smaller, lesser-known characters in the DCU. This strategy is a new one for them, and time will tell if it turns out well for them.
After Supergirl‘s box office bomb, fans’ trust is lower than usual, so going for these smaller characters could be a large risk. Still, many comic fans are excited for these upcoming series, as the characters in these shows are far more prevalent in the DC comics.
Series and films like these could bring fresh air to a stale genre. A move like this could even bring in a new trend in superhero shows and films to focus on smaller characters instead of their figureheads. It all depends on how DC handles these smaller series and how they succeed.
