HBO’s The Last of Us has added another major cast member for its upcoming season three, further expanding the ensemble expected to carry the series’ next chapter. According to Deadline, Peter Sarsgaard (Dopesick, Presumed Innocent) has joined the hit drama in a recurring role.
Sarsgaard will portray Amon, a new character created specifically for the television adaptation. Deadline reports that Amon is one of the leaders of the Seraphites, a religious faction expected to play a larger role as the story moves forward. The character does not appear in the original Naughty Dog video game.
News of Sarsgaard’s casting arrives as production enters a planned hiatus. Filming has paused for approximately one month while Vancouver prepares to host FIFA World Cup events. Production is expected to resume afterward and continue through the end of the year, ahead of a planned 2027 premiere.
mxdwn has previously followed HBO’s ongoing expansion of the season three cast. One recent report covered the addition of Li Jun Li (Babylon, Wu Assassins), whose casting signaled the series’ continued growth as it moves deeper into the story established by the games, as well as other castings.
While HBO has not revealed specific plot details for season three, Deadline notes that the upcoming installment is expected to focus heavily on Abby Anderson, played by Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart, No One Will Save You). The Seraphites were introduced during season two and are expected to become increasingly important moving forward.
Based on the acclaimed video game franchise, The Last of Us was co-created by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl, The Specials) and Neil Druckmann (The Last of Us Part II, Uncharted). The series follows Joel, played by Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian, The Fantastic Four: First Steps), and Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, Catherine Called Birdy), as they navigate a world devastated by a fungal pandemic.
Mazin will serve as the sole showrunner for season three, with filming expected to continue through the remainder of the year, targeting a 2027 premiere.
