Disney+ has landed a new project which is a live action series called Casper. The series is in early development so we have little to go on and we’ll have to wait to see what our friendly ghost is up to.
For those who don’t know, Casper was created in the late 1930s where a ghost doesn’t want to scare anybody and instead wants to make friends with people. According to Deadline, the live action series is described as a modern update on the classic story. The series is believed to have a dark edge to it the same way how Wednesday takes on The Addams Family lore. Robert Letterman (Goosebumps, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu) and Hilary Winston (Going Dutch, Krapopolis) are set to direct the series. The character went through many changes over the years from a comic series to a string of animated movies that had been made by Famous Studios, around 1952 Casper made his debut in comic books and was a part of a 1995 live action movie, where the movie was poroduced by Steven Speilberg’s (Tiny Toons Looniversity, The Dinosuars), Amblin Entertainmain and The Harvey Entertainment Co.
Letterman is also know for his work in developing the 2023 Goosebumps TV Show. Letterman had also directed 1995 Goosebumps feature. Letterman also partook in being a part of Monsters vs Aliens and Pokémon: Detective Pijkachu. Winston serves as an executive producer and a co-showrunner on the current second season of FOX’s Going Dutch. Her other writing credits go to Krapopolis, Community, Happy Endings, My Name is Earl, and CBS’ Bad Teacher. According to Deadline, this was this consideration was made when it came to the live action Casper series, “If Casper, which has a premium development deal, goes to series, it will be Universal Studio Group’s first on Disney+. I hear that was a consideration when choosing the winner in the bidding war as having shows on all major streamers has been a goal for the studio.”
We will have to keep our eyes peeled for a trailer, that will give us more information on the upcoming series.
