Netflix’s A Different World is moving along smoothly with production. According to Deadline, the project announced that original series cast members Jenifer Lewis (GOAT, The Upshaws) and Charlene Brown (Trouble, Sundown) are joining the sequel series.
For those who don’t know, the series tells a story about the original series’ couple Dwayne and Whitley’s youngest daughter, Deborah, attending the historically black college known as Hillman College. At Hillman, Deborah will find it difficult to escape from her parents’ shadow as she strives to build her own legacy, while also having the time of her life. According to Deadline, Debbie Allen (Grey’s Anatomy, A Motown Christmas), the director of 83 episodes of the original series, will direct three episodes of the series, including the first episode.
Brown will reprise her role as medical student Kimberly Reese, while Lewis returns as Dorothy Dandridge Davenport, a former dean who is now a professor. Deadline reports five additional cast members join the two veteran actors: Dasan Fraizern(The Ms. Pat Show, Be Nice. Smile) will play Xavier; Renee Harrison (Seek No Favor, The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat) will play Candace; Vincent Jamal Hooper (Chicago Med, Shots Fired) will play Ellington; Elijah J. Roberts (Leon’s Fury, The Client) will play Jalen; and Famecia Ward (Dakota, UnWelcomed Justice) will play Nellie Gaines.
Those seven join the previously announced Jasmine Guy (Noah’s Arc: The. Movie, Poker Face), Kadeem Hardison (Euphoria, War Dawgz), Merrick McCartha (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, House of Payne), Cree Summer (Strip Law, Abbott Elementary), Chibuikem Uche (The Night Agent, The Rookie), Darryl M. Bell (Insecure, The Dark Party), Michael Rose (Miss Governor, The Great Lillian Hall), Maleah Joi Moon (Mystic Christmas, Disney Television Discovers: Talent Showcase), Alijah Kai (Can You Feel the Beat: The Lisa Lisa Story, Abducted at an HBCU: A Black Girl Missing Movie), Jordan Aaron Hall (Graduation Day, The Idea of You), Cornell Young IV (Dream House, Mind Your Business), Antwinette McCloud (Beyond the Gates, Post Grad: The Series), Kennedy McCourt (A Different World, Christmas All Over Again), and Kennedi Reece (A Different World, Charged).
With the series already in production, it’s only a matter of time before we get a glimpse at the official trailer. The series will join a lineup of Netflix’s other shows filming in Atlanta, like the recent thriller His & Hers, and the upcoming Tis So Sweet and All the Sinners Bleed.
