After closing a chapter in Hawkins, the Duffer Bros. (Stranger Things, Something Bad Is Going to Happen) have prepared their next project on the producing side, the supernatural series, The Boroughs. Netflix released first-look photos and announced a May premiere date.
Picked up in April of 2023, the series comes from Jeffrey Addis (The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim) and Will Matthews (Rick & Steve the Happiest Gay Couple in All the World, The Middle) with the Duffers producing under their Upside Down Pictures. Boasting an A-list cast of veteran actors, the official logline for the series reads as follows: “In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.”

Among the colorful cast are Alfred Molina (Solar Opposites, Blood of Zeus) as Sam, Geena Davis (Commander in Chief, The Long Kiss Goodnight) as Renee, Bill Pullman (Killing Faith, Murdaugh Murders: The Movie) as Jack, Clarke Peters (The Wire, His Dark Materials) as Art, Alfre Woodard (The Last Frontier, Salem’s Lot) as Judy and Denis O’Hare (This is Us, American Horror Story) as Wally.
According to Netflix’s Tudum, details for the series are a bit more clearer. Molina’s Sam is a new resident at the retirement community when he has an otherworldly encounter. He jump starts the investigation, which leads his accomplices on a life-changing journey.

“He recently lost his wife, and he’s trying to figure out what to do with the time he has left, which is a question we all face, no matter our age. It’s just the stakes get higher the more years you have under your belt,” Addiss and Matthews told Tudum. “Everyone talks about wanting to make a show that teenagers can watch with their parents. We wanted to make one that teenagers could watch with their parents and their grandparents, that everyone could enjoy.”
The Duffer Bros. fell in love with Addis and Matthews pitch, Tudum reports, likening it to the 80s film Cocoon, which saw elder citizens encounter a supernatural force.
“While the characters are a little older than the kids in Stranger Things — they ride golf carts instead of bikes — the spirit is very much the same,” the Duffer Brothers added via Tudum. “At its core, this is a story about belonging and growing up — no matter your age — filled with adventure, wonder, comedy, scares, and tears. And most importantly, you’re going to fall in love with these characters. Watching legends like Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Clarke Peters, Denis O’Hare, and Bill Pullman bring them to life was genuinely magical. The monsters are very cool — but it’s the characters who will stay with you.”
The Boroughs arrives May 21 with all eight episodes to enjoy only on Netflix.
