According to Deadline, NBC is attempting to revive some old Hollywood traditions in a world run by streamers. NBC is relaunching pilot season and Friday night greenlights. Some of the latest of these orders are the crime drama Puzzled and Wolf’s Entertainment What The Dead Know.
Deadline has reported that Puzzled finds itself led by former Charmed showrunner Joey Falco (Judgement, Heros Reborn). What The Dead Know is headed by Dick Wolf (Law & Order, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) and Beth Rinehart (Chicago Justice, NCIS: New Orleans). Both shows fall into the cop/crime genre and are based on source material.
According to Deadline, Puzzled will follow Mike Brink in the wake of a tragic fire that has left him with a traumatic brain injury. The catch is that Brink is now able to see the world through a new lens and help local law enforcement solve crimes.
Deadline has reported that What The Dead Know’s title is not trying to play with any metaphors. The series’ main character, Ava Ledger, is a death inspector whose specialty is understanding dead bodies.
According to Deadline, in addition to Wolf and Rinehart, What The Dead Know is executive produced by Peter Jankowski (Law & Order, FBI), Tom Thayer (Hitchcock, The Andormeda Strain), and Anastasia Puglisi (FBI, Chicago P.D.) Co-Executive Producers include the author of the source material, Barbara Butcher (What The Dead Know), Kevin Plunkett (The Brand, ABC World News), and Rebecca McGill (FBI: Most Wanted, FBI).
Deadline has reported that NBC was expected to order several series this year, including four comedies and four dramas, but they had already surpassed expectations with five dramas:The Rockford Files reboot, Protection, the untitled Georgaris/Fox project, Puzzled, and What the Dead Know. All of these fall into the crime genre in some way, perhaps indicating what NBC still finds successful in broadcast television.
According to Deadline, NBC has greenlit one comedy so far this year, untitled Goor/Del Tredici project, and it still centers on a private detective. Whether NBC will still aim to add three more comedies is unclear.
Deadline has reported that Falco recently worked on the ABC legal drama Judgement. He has written for series such as Sleepy Hollow and HeroesReborn. Rinehart’s credits include FBI: Most Wanted, Law & Order: SVU, and Chicago Justice.
