According to Variety, fans of Apple TV’s new sci-fi drama Pluribus can now download an in-universe companion: Bloodsong of Wycaro, the fictional romantasy novel written by Carol Sturka (Better Call Saul, Veep), the character portrayed by Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul, Veep). The 11-page excerpt, released through Apple Books, expands the lore of Carol’s bestselling Winds of Wycaro series a franchise, she openly despises in the show and serves as a narrative extension of the moment featured in Pluribus’ debut episode.
In the show’s first episode, Carol takes part in a Barnes & Noble signing for her newest book, where several readers challenge her about why Raban, the beloved romantic figure of the series, is missing from the cover. As stated by Variety, the excerpt’s accompanying “Letter From the Author” addresses these complaints head-on, with Carol discussing her irritation toward the franchise and her fondness for the Sisyphus myth. Her uneasy relationship with her own popularity remains central to Pluribus, which portrays her as “the most miserable person on Earth.”
The description of the novel the fourth installment in the Wycaro line reads: “Take sail with Lucasia, Captain of the duneship Mercator, as she traverses the amaranthine sands of Wycaro seeking a cure for the insidious illness felling her crew…” According to Variety, the excerpt leans into the show’s satirical tone, echoing the grandiose melodrama Carol wishes she could escape.
As noted by Variety, Pluribus follows Carol in the aftermath of “The Joining,” a global event that leaves only 12 people untouched while everyone else merges into a single, cheerful collective mind. As society tries to “fix” her, Carol fights to hold onto her sense of self. The series is the first new project from creator Vince Gilligan (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) since his celebrated run on AMC. “I wanted to prove to myself I wasn’t a one-trick pony,” Gilligan told Variety in his conversation with Seehorn, reflecting on the challenge of crafting a completely original concept.
According to Variety, Apple has experimented with metafictional tie-ins before. Earlier this year, the streamer released The You You Are, the self-help book from Severance, narrated by actor Michael Chernus (Orange Is the New Black, Spider-Man: Homecoming), who plays Ricken Hale in the series. Moroever, Variety adds that the studio intends to expand these supplemental pieces across its major genre titles.
As reported by Variety, Pluribus debuted November 7th, with the first three episodes currently streaming on Apple TV.
