NBC will celebrate Saturday Night Live‘s 40 year legacy with a three hour live special, to be broadcast on February 15, 2015.
According to Variety, the show’s lineup will include current SNL cast members, alumni and special guests. The details of exactly who will appear are still being determined and the participant lineup will be announced in the coming months.
“Saturday Night Live is an institution unlike anything else in television history,” said Robert Greenblatt, chairman of NBC Entertainment. “The many brilliant ‘Not Ready for Primetime Players’ over the years is a who’s who of film and television comedy for the last two generations.”
Since its debut in 1975, SNL has featured top comedy talent such as Eddie Murphy, Billy Crystal, Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, to name a few. Many have gone on to have rich film and television careers, while two recent SNL graduates (Fallon and Meyers) currently lead NBC’s 11:35 p.m. and 12:35 a.m. late-night slots. The program has earned 40 Emmy awards — more than any other show in TV history — and a staggering 171 nominations.
It seems fans of the show can look forward to many more surprises too, as Greenblatt noted “This special is just one of the many ways we plan to celebrate SNL’s historic 40th season next year.”
