Danny McBride’s comedy The Righteous Gemstones, which first debuted in 2019, has officially reached its finale. The Emmy-award winner and actor on the series spoke to Deadline in an interview, discussing many different plot points and his comedic skills that drew his audience in the show’s episodes. McBride also credited the uniqueness of the costars John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane, Flight) and Walton Goggins (Sons of Anarchy, Predators) for their dedication to the show; especially when coercing Goodman to reenact explicit sexual scenes in the name of comedy.
“I just grew up idolizing John Goodman and always have thought he’s awesome, he’s such a good actor, he’s such a funny comedian,” McBride said of the actor via Deadline. “I’ve always appreciated his choices that he’s made in his career, and it felt unreal to walk onto the set with him. And you’re watching him and he’s saying your words and he’s bringing things to it that you didn’t anticipate. I just think he’s such a special person, and it was great.”
With the unique absurdity of the show’s humor, Deadline reports the show’s final episode is reported to deviate away from the usual slapstick comedy that fans recognize, and bring in some tender moments for Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin. McBride continued to uplift his cast, as well as bringing the show’s ending to a heartfelt close.
“And I always kind of knew that would be somewhat of how I would leave those characters, is that they would be tried in the simplest of ways, without all of those advantages that they’ve had, and what they would do in that moment,” McBride continued via Deadline.
As well as starring in the series as his character Jesse Gemstone, McBride detailed to Deadline how he delved deep into the more explicit themes of the show. He even mentioned how his onscreen dad, Goodman, performed a 69 sex scene on screen, showing the series’ sometimes absurd form of comedy doesn’t shy away from the explicit.
With such a prominent background in acting, McBride has seen breakout performances in past creations such as Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals. In McBride’s interview with Deadline, he’s asked one final question on his next works in progress, which McBride comedically responds he’s taking a break.
“It’s just been such a mad rush to complete this show this season, we had to do it in a quicker time than we’ve ever done it,” he said via the interview with Deadline. “And it’s taken so much of my mind that I’m literally just kind of like, ‘Hey guys, I’m going on vacation. So, I’m gonna go make a sandwich and relax, and then I’ll come up with what’s next, I guess.’
All seasons of The Righteous Gemstones can be streamed on Max.
