Insecure is a show that introduces us to the uncomfortable, awkward experiences that African American women face, whether they are dealing with their career, love life, or modern society. Insecure debuted on the HBO Network in the Fall of 2016. According to WBHM, Insecure was a revolutionary series for the black community and black women. It gave viewers an insight into the importance of sisterhood, especially in a black culture where there’s constantly an expectation to live by the status quo. You see love, joy, pain laughter, and even a sprinkle of drama.
Furthermore, the first episode of the fifth season begins with Issa Dee taking a road trip journey and reuniting with her old friends as they pay their alma mater a visit at Stansfield University. Issa joined other alumni members, who each had individual success with their careers and business ventures. However, the fun was short-lived because Issa saw her own reflection in the mirror reminding her current self that life was no longer what she had known it to be. Could it be that she was oblivious to wasting her twenties away and envious of what her friends and colleagues have accomplished thus far?
It’s still early in the season, so Issa Dee has time to redeem herself if she is looking to change her life for the better. Only time will tell. Issa obviously isn’t as happy as she was in previous seasons. Perhaps, a new job opportunity or love interest will be revealed in future episodes? It is interesting to see the character dynamic within these group of women and what they continue to bring to the show. Fans automatically can relate to the post-college depression that is uncovered in later episodes. HBO truly has a dark horse show in Insecure. The show has already won an Emmy and received multiple award nominations, so far. The next episode may just shake things up a bit.
