‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Season 2 Episode 5 “Pass Through Fire”

Amazon Prime Video’s original series The Legend of Vox Machina season two episode five entitled “Pass Through Fire” kicks off with Marisha Ray’s Keyleth as she has a flashback to when she was a little girl. This is where the viewer sees her mother as she leaves to go on her magic pilgrimage. In her mind, this is something she must do to be a better magic user and help the people of the world. Unfortunately, the viewer can assume that she lost her life during the pilgrimage. The interesting thing about this is how the viewer can make an assumption that the reason why Keyleth is so obsessed with helping others is due to the loss of her mother. Not to mention that as a result of her mother wanting to a be a great magic user, she feels the need to follow in her footsteps. Perhaps this is her way of trying to understand her decision of leaving her at such a young age.

Additionally, the viewer sees Travis Willingham’s Grog Strongjaw as he talks to his cursed sword. From the look of the sword the series gives a hint that the sword could lead to an even greater villain in the future. Also, it could lead to Grog turning evil as it has shown to take over Grogs mind when it feeds on blood. In his mind, Grog sees how powerful he becomes when he feeds the sword the blood it wants. Normally he loves to fight, especially when it gives him a challenge to test himself. Unfortunately, as he sees that the sword wanted to kill one of his friends, he might not want to use it as much. This could lead to a possible addiction storyline for his character as he loves the power it gives him.

At the end of the episode, the series demonstrates how Keyleth’s mindset works with how she tries to help her people. From the look of things, it appears that she may suffer from anxiety as she has a difficult time with believing she is not good enough at magic. This could be a result of her mother leaving her with the feeling of not being enough. Deep down she still is that little girl who does not understand why her mother left her when she needed her to guide her in life. Luckily, at the climax of the episode she realizes that she has the capacity to be a great magic user by just believing in herself. This demonstrates how the mind is a powerful thing when a person focuses on pushing beyond their limits. Thanks to this realization Keyleth has now found that she does not need to live up to anyone except herself and has a new understanding of what it means to be a magic user.
