Prime Video’s original series The Legend of Vox Machina ,season two episode eleven entitled “Belly of the Beast,” kicks off with Sam Riegel’s Scanlan Shorthalt as he tries to process the fact that Aisling Franciosi’s Kaylie is his daughter, all while having a sword pointed at his throat. This is due to how she wants to kill him for abandoning her and her mother. In her mind, she sees that her father is a no-good womanizer who never cared about her mother. Deep down she may have wanted him to be different than what she had seen for herself. Unfortunately, she now understands why her mother suffered the way she did with how hard she had to work to support her as a result of him not being there for them.
Additionally, the viewer sees that Scanlan’s personality changes when he finds out that he has a daughter. In his mind, he feels that the missing part he always felt in his heart can be filled by his daughter. However, he knows that in her eyes she sees him as a bad person due to being absent in her and her mother’s lives. Deep down he hates himself for the way he is with women, and he does not know why he treats them the way he does. This is made more apparent with the pain he sees in his daughter’s eyes as she talks about her mother.
At the end of the episode, Liam O’Brien’s Vax’ildan finally meets with the Matron of Ravens to see what it is she wants. Deep down Vax knows that he owes her a debt that he must pay. Although throughout the series she has been associated with possible evil and death, Vax fears for the worse when it comes to her. In his mind, he is afraid that he will end up hurting those he loves as a result of him doing what the Matron wants. However, the series does a great job at misdirecting the viewer as the Matron turns out to be a keeper of fate and nothing else. Not to mention that Vax is her champion instead of her slave. Now with this information, Vax is now proud and relieved that he will be a champion for fate.
