‘The Diplomat’ Season 1 Episode 6 “Some Lusty Tornado”

Netflix’s original series The Diplomat ,season one episode six entitled “Some Lusty Tornado,” starts with a nice change of pace with a humorous scene with Keri Russell’s Kate Wyler and Rufus Sewell’s Hal Wyler. This is due to Kate being overly stressed following her efforts to deal with the crisis involving Russia. From what the viewer can see the series wanted to give the viewer some breath of fresh air away from the tension. This is demonstrated by how they sneak into the compound’s storage locker to get some food and have a good time. The scene is made even more humorous as Rory Kinnear’s Prime Minister Trowbridge catches them in the act. However, the scene changes to them enjoying some wine with him as he apparently went in to get some in secret. The interesting part about this how the viewer gets to know more about him other than him being a reckless man. In his mind, he has to be the strong one otherwise, someone else will step in and mess everything up. Deep down he wants to talk things out as war causes more death which he hates. The issue is that in his eyes, David’s Gyasi’s Foreign Secretary Dennison holds all the moral high ground. And even if he wanted to talk things over, he would just be ignored in favor of Foreign Secretary Dennison.

Additionally, the viewer finds out that the Prime Minster is just a puppet as Celia Imire’s Margaret Roylin is the one telling him what he should do. The interesting part about this is how the United Kingdom could lose power if the Prime Minister does not follow what she says. This is a result of a chain reaction of events set off by Kate’s influence on the Prime Minister. In Roylin’s mind, she as well cannot let that happen as she does not want the United Kingdom to lose its power. She sees it as her civic duty to ensure the United Kingdom remains strong and firm for years to come. From the look on Kate’s face, she too understands that they must remain strong as they are one of the United States’s greatest allies.

Towards the end of the episode, Kate makes a new plan so that everyone wins against Russia. Unfortunately, Miguel Sandoval’s Miguel Ganon moves to kill the plan due to it affecting his run for Vice President. In his mind, he thought that Kate was not going to be a problem as she was just Hal’s wife. However, now he sees that Kate is truly a threat as she has proven through her quick and resourceful thinking that she can outthink circles around everyone including him. Deep down he knows that he underestimated Kate’s ability as a diplomat and now must pay the price. The fascinating part about this is how in a car ride with Hal, he let it slip that he had a secret meeting with someone. From this the viewer can assume he will try a dirty tactic to mess things up for Kate.

At the end of the episode, the viewer feels a sense of anticipation with the possibility of Kate’s plan being killed. From the look on her face, it is easy to assume that she already has given up as Ganon holds a substantial amount of influence in the White House. Influence that can very well end her career if he manages to kill her plan. Luckily, in an extraordinary turn of events things work as her plan has passed into motion. This is yet another accomplishment for Kate which further proves that she deserves the job as Vice President. Judging from the numerous accomplishments, the viewer can guess that eventually Kate will take the job. Perhaps in a later season she may even become President as things seem to be heading into that direction with her winning streak.
