Review: ‘Star Wars Visions’ Season 2 Episode 6 “The Spy Dancer”

Disney Plus’s original series, Star Wars Visions, Season 2 Episode 6, “The Spy Dancer,” explores the story of the spy dancer Loi’e (Camille Cottin) and her homeworld’s rebel cell working to fight the Galactic Empire on her homeworld. Loi’e is a famous dancer who performs in her nightclub, Loi’e’s Follies. Loi’e’s role is to dance and carefully place trackers on the Imperial stormtroopers, her audience, so her rebel cell can track their every move. However, Loi’e saw an Imperial ISB officer (Rudi-James Jephcott), resembling the one that stole her infant son years ago, watching her performance. The ISB officer’s presence caused Loi’e to act rashly and attack the ISB officer, who turned out to be her grown-up lost son. The details were that the ISB officer who stole Loi’e’s infant son raised her son, cut off his horns to make him more human, and had him grow up to become an Imperial ISB officer like him. Because of Loi’e’s attack, Loi’e’s son ordered the audience of stormtroopers to kill Loi’e and her rebel cell. Despite this, Loi’e tried to convince her son of how the Empire kidnapped and brainwashed him into becoming a ruthless imperial officer, only for Loi’e’s son to deny what happened in the past. The confrontation ended with Loi’e hugging her son and escaping with the help of her rebel cell and their ship. The episode ends with Loi’e hoping she can save her son from the Empire’s grasp and Loi’e’s son coming to terms with his true heritage by watching a hologram image of him as an infant. After seeing the hologram image, Loi’e’s son put his hologram image projector down, revealing Loi’e’s tracker on its bottom.

Star Wars Celebration LIVE! 2023 – Day 4

Director and writer Julien Chheng, writer Gabriele D’Andrimont, and those involved with the episode “The Spy Dancer” in Studio La Cachette did an excellent job creating a Star Wars story of a spy dancer that tried to help the Rebel Alliance by spying on her nightclub’s imperial customers, comprising of stormtroopers and officers. In the Star Wars Celebration 2023 Day 4 event, Director Chheng detailed he and his team wanted to make a story that paid “tribute to Star Wars side characters, like Jabba’s dancers, that made the Star Wars universe rich and vivid.” In addition, he explained that the inspiration for the story came from famous dancers, such as Mata Hari or Josephine Baker, that were spies during World War I and World War II. The reason was that some famous dancers during both world wars “performed in front of the soldiers and gathered information and secrets whispered by the officers.” Thus, the main character, Loi’e, is a spy dancer who helped collect intel for the Rebel Alliance that could change the tides of the Galactic Civil War in the Rebel Alliance’s favor.

Director Chheng also explained that he and his team wanted to add actions and fight scenes involving dancing in the short episode. They created “a unique way of dancing using veils that Loi’e can swirl and a dress that she can expand” when she fought the stormtroopers in her nightclub. Loi’e’s dance fight techniques fascinated and scared her enemies. Director Chheng concluded that he and his team enjoyed “creating the dance moves for her: a blend of pure delicacy and pure strength.” The short episode did well in showing how a spy dancer used her dancing skills to help the Rebel Alliance gain new intel. But the main impact was how she later found hope when she found her son alive as an Imperial ISB officer sent to oversee the Empire’s control of her homeworld. Thus, the ending foreshadowed Loi’e gradually saving her son and homeworld from the Empire and its control. Overall, the short episode was fun and emotional to watch because of the hard work of Director Chheng, writer Gabriele D’Andrimont, and those involved in Studio La Cachette committed to bringing their story to life.

The Alliance to Restore the Republic

The Age of Rebellion is when the Alliance to Restore the Republic (The Rebel Alliance) fought against the Galactic Empire. Their goal is to liberate the Known Galaxy from the Empire’s oppressive rule and restore the Galactic Republic. The Rebel Alliance started as small rebel cells that later united to become a tactical paramilitary with a small yet powerful navy. Each rebel cell operated in a world ruled by the Galactic Empire, and they were, at times, made up mostly of natives of those worlds. Soon, the Rebel Alliance gradually defeated the Galactic Empire, beginning with Emperor Palpatine’s death, the creation of the New Republic, and the Empire’s military defeat at the Battle of Jakku.
