Season Seven Episode Six of Amazon’s ‘Bosch’ Review: Death Hits Close to Home

Season seven episode six of Amazon’s Bosch, titled “The Greater Good” starts off with a bang, pun intended. Within the very first moments of the episode there are shots being fired, hitmen being chased, and Judge’s being held hostage. Talk about a non-stop thrill ride.

Attorney J. Folkes (Spencer Garrett, Air Force One) has been known on all seven seasons for representing dirtbag clients. His latest scumbag? Carl Rogers (Max E. Williams, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D), a cunning millionaire running a money scheme and a major suspect in the murder of Vincent Franzen. At the beginning of the episode, a mysterious man that Folkes met at a bar sneaks into his home and shoots him dead. This hitman then tries to hunt down another person involved in the case: Maddie Bosch (Madison Lintz, The Walking Dead).

The shoot-off between the hitman, Detective Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver, Lost), and Detective Robertson (Paul Calderon, Pulp Fiction) in a parking garage was the most riveting action this season has had thus far. Maddie was set to testify in court as a witness in the Franzen case which put a major target on her back, and Bosch realized they were being watched in the parking garage after he found Judge Sobel (Bess Armstrong, The Four Seasons) dead in her car. Suddenly, shots were fired at Bosch (luckily missing!) and he gave orders for Maddie and Robertson to get down. To the viewers surprise, the hero of the day was none other than Bosch’s partner, Jerry Edgar (Jamie Hector, The Wire) coming in from left field to catch the killer from behind.

Until this moment, season seven has been a lot of set-up with little action, but this stand-off was a game changer that brought some much-needed excitement to the story. To see Maddie and Bosch both in the crosshairs? What a nail biter! The thrill and suspense of a shoot out had us on the edge of our seats, but the emotional intensity between the characters that followed was just as riveting. Bosch felt responsible for the death of Judge Sobel, his former love interest, and for putting Maddie in life threatening danger.

“I should’ve thought it through better, how they might come at us,” Bosch laments to Maddie. “I could have warned her.”

Did we almost see Bosch shed a tear?

Bosch isn’t the only one trying to make sense of his guilt. At the end of the episode, Edgar apologizes to Bosch for dropping the ball lately. He is sincerely sorry for the way he’s let things slip through the cracks, and is clearly tormented by the guilt it’s given him.

Emotions are high after death hit so close to home, but where does this leave the cases? Rogers was arrested for allegedly being the one giving orders to the hitman, but nothing is quite proven, yet. Meanwhile, the arson case is still up in the air. Will Bosch be able to double down and find the killers?
