Review: ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Season 1, Episode 6 “Duel With the Devil”

Previously on the Disney+ series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, after finding out that Peter Parker (Hudson Thames) is Spider-Man, Norman Osborn’s (Colman Domingo) son, Harry (Zeno Robinson), decides to help him out on his missions, creating a unique friendship between the two. Dr. Otto Octavius (Hugh Dancy) is introduced as a scientist who aims to rule the world. Lonnie Lincoln (Eugene Byrd) gets more entangled in the 110th Street Gang, helping Big Ben Donovan (Leilani Barrett) with their rival gang, the Scorpions.

The next episode starts with Peter and Nico (Grace Song) in class. The two of them are sitting away from each other. Peter gets in trouble as he tries to get her attention. After class, Lonnie is in the locker room. His football coach cuts him off the team, taking his things out of his locker. Pearl (Cathy Ang) is waiting for him in the hallway and expresses how he’s been distant from her and school. He walks away as she tries to tell him that he can talk to her if he’s in trouble.

Lonnie skips the rest of his classes for the day and goes home. He and his brother argue about him being with the gang. Andre tells him it should be him, not Lonnie. He says that Lonnie has way too much to lose in his life for him to be with Big Ben.

Peter has Nico and Harry over at his place after school to get acquainted. Nico is hesitant with Peter becoming friends with Harry, so Peter plans to help them bond. As she leaves, Aunt May (Kari Wahlgren) tells them to have fun. Peter grabs a box of VHS tapes and sets them in the living room, having Nico and Harry choose a movie. The two of them go back and forth between what movie they should watch and Peter awkwardly smiles at them, choosing the Predator

Norman goes to a fundraiser, representing Oscorp. He walks up to Secretary Thaddeus Ross (Travis Willingham). They discuss Spider-Man, Norman showing him his research on his tablet. Norman says that what he shares needs to be classified. Thaddeus notices a security breach in Norman’s office, which shows up on his tablet, so he hands it to him. Norman calls Harry, asking for Peter. Norman tells him to investigate the breach. Peter tells Harry & Nico he’s going to grab some more soda, but instead goes to Oscorp.

As Peter gets to the office, he sees that someone has broken in from the window. He sees a security guard knocked out on the floor and goes to check if anyone is there. He goes up to the roof and sees Daredevil (Charlie Cox). The two of them begin to fight, and Daredevil dodges Peter’s webs. He warns Peter that he shouldn’t be protecting Norman and that something bad is going to happen soon, before knocking him out.

While waiting for Peter, Nico and Harry begin to get bored. Nico tells him that she can do a tarot reading, which gets him excited. After pulling some cards, she sees the Devil’s card, telling him that he has something holding him back. Things get awkward as Harry comments about not really being into tarot cards.

Next, we see Peter as he wakes up with the security guard on the phone with Norman. He hands Peter the phone and Norman tells him that he’s on his way to the office. When he gets there, he tells Peter about Otto. Otto was part of the plan of Oscorp, working with Norman. Once he left, he stole all of their ideas and began to do things his way. While Norman believes Daredevil is working with Otto, Peter doesn’t agree.

Peter goes home and finds out that Harry told Nico that he’s Spider-Man. She thinks it was a joke, before opening Peter’s backpack to find his suit and notebook. She leaves abruptly.

After being followed by one of the Scorpion members, Lonnie runs to the 110th Street gang’s hideout. Big Ben tells him he can stay there for the night so that he doesn’t get followed or chased home. What they don’t know is that it was all a trap, for the Scorpions to find out where their hideout was.

At the end of the episode, we see Mac Gargan (Jonathan Medina), as he’s now in his Scorpion suit, made by Otto.

Overall, this was a decent episode. It was slow but had a lot of good scenes. It’s upsetting to see that Lonnie hasn’t been doing well in school or football. It will probably get worse as time goes on. Although there was a rough start between Nico and Harry, there’s a possibility things can be fixed and they can create a good friendship. As a Marvel fan, it’s exciting to see Daredevil and more exciting to know that Charlie Cox is the voice actor. What will Norman have Peter do with Otto? Will we see him fight the Scorpion aka Gargan in the next episode?
