Review ‘X-Men ‘97’ Season 1 Episode 4 “Motendo/Life death-Part 1”

Season 1 Episode 4 primarily focuses on two main stories. One with Jubilee and Roberto battling Mojo through a video game that Mojo has trapped them in. The second story follows Storm as she tries to get her powers back with the help of Forge, and the challenges they face along the way. This episode connects and relies on the previous episodes of the show, but does not rely on anything from X-Men; The Animated Series. This episode feels smaller in scale compared to the prior episodes of the series because it focuses more on some of the characters that have been away from the spotlight. With that said, this episode is the weakest of the season because the episode just doesn’t do much to keep excitement throughout, making it sometimes feel bland and uninteresting.

The writing by Beau DeMayo was still good throughout the episode. Its only issue is that the characters in this episode just feel empty. The script does not give the characters a lot of emotions that allow for the characters to feel more real and charismatic for the audience members. The story is good in this episode, but the issue is that the stories feel so much smaller and less important than the things that occurred in the past episodes, making it more difficult to feel engaged throughout.

The voice acting is good throughout the episode from the entire crew. The standout was Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm. She is able to carry the scenes which she is in, making her a prominent presence every time. There was also a surprise cameo from the original voice actor of Jubilee, more strongly connecting this show to the original. The animation is stellar yet again, from the colors to the character designs, to the fight creation, etc. It continues to impress and elevate itself in terms of animation while also continuing to make the show feel nostalgic and similar to the original X-Men The Animated Series.

Overall, Season 1 Episode 4 of X-Men ‘97 is the weakest of the season so far, but it is still able to stand on its own with some fun moments.
