Review: ‘Wonder Man’ Season 1, Episode 5 “Found Footage”

Episode 5 opens with Trevor and Simon in a restaurant talking about their successful auditions for Wonder Man, and what the role means to Simon. A random stranger buys Simon and Trevor a round of drinks, before introducing himself to Trevor.

Trevor doesn’t seem to remember him, so the stranger brings him and Simon outside to “help them remember.” Simon uses his powers to save him and Trevor, when they notice a man on a scooter with a camera, who recorded the whole thing. The man drives off, and the two pursue.

While initially losing him in traffic, they eventually spot him once again and attempt to pursue him. Trevor gets an email from Janelle, who lets them know that Barnaby will betray Wonder Man in the movie, which causes Simon to brake in shock. While talking about the scene and the potential to lose it if the footage is released, they spot the man once again, and they follow him into a party house. The man asks Simon to help him get his motorcycle back from a guy named Esteban, or the footage will be uploaded to YouTube.

Simon, Trevor, and the man head to Esteban’s house, and attempt to get back the motorcycle, where Esteban reveals that the man (named Jayden) cannot be trusted. Esteban also reveals that he and Jayden used to be friends and ran their chamoy candy operation together. After Jayden got a taste of success, he changed, and split from the business, starting his own. The goons from earlier hold Jayden at gunpoint, and Trevor manages to get the footage from Jayden. Amidst all the chaos, Janelle calls Simon. She lets him know that the callback has been moved up, and he has to get there now. Trevor and Simon storm out, and rush to the callback, just as more chaos ensues.

This is the episode where we finally got a bit more of the superhero side of our characters. It felt less like the Hollywood actors trying to revitalize their careers, and more like two novice detectives attempting to solve a case. The episode could have been a little longer, but it was fun for what it was. Though it was connected to the plot, it honestly felt like it was one of those standalone episodes, that had not as much to do with the main plot (except for the footage ruining the chance of being an actor). Overall, the episode was good and funny.

Zach Zucconi: I am a 20-year-old from New Jersey. I graduated with an Associate's of the Arts and am currently in the process of completing my Bachelor's in Communications. I have taken part in the university television station where I was able to act in a show and work behind the scenes. I also have hosted a radio show and have been able to learn the mechanical workings on how the radio shows operate. I have always been interested in different video games growing up and have recently become more interested in movies, film, radio, and screenplay. I have created many characters and have many ideas for different movies, video games, and shows. Besides creating the characters and stories, I believe I would also like to take part in them as well.
