Continuing through, episode 3 begins with a 13-year-old Simon getting a checkup at the doctors, where he shows no signs of smoke inhalation after a fire.
Back in the present, the center for damage control is talking about the prison being half empty. Trevor is then told by the Damage Control director to wear a wire to get some info about the fire. After Trevor and Simon have a discussion about acting, Simon gets a notification that he has to go to Pacoima for his mother’s birthday, letting Trevor tag along for the journey.
Trevor and Simon arrive at the house. After Trevor meets Simon’s mother and brother, they show him the kitchen that was just renovated. The fire is brought up, and Trevor presses for details before being interrupted by the partygoers. After the feast, some tense words, Trevor nearly getting caught talking to damage control, and the night rolls in, Trevor gets to speak with Simon’s mother.
After a story from Simon’s childhood, the party ends, and Trevor and Simon begin to head home. Before they can head out, Eric starts to press Simon on details about his American Horror Story audition. Simon tells the truth, and after some harsh words, Simon shatters the entire kitchen island in anger. With that, Trevor and Simon finally leave and talk about what just happened. After the discussion, Trevor leaves to “pee” and destroys the wire. He then heads back to the car, where Simon reveals that they both got callbacks for Wonder Man.
This was another good addition to this series. It does something interesting with the superhero side of Simon. It seems more like the “hero” side of Simon is almost representative of his anger. He has only used his powers whenever he has gotten angry, or frustrated, not to save the day. It’s almost like the powers are his dark side, and they only have come out when he has to vent or release his anger. Stuff like this has been done before, with powers being portrayed as more of a burden than a blessing; it’s just interesting to see it. It’s also nice seeing the friendship grow between Simon and Trevor, though you have to wonder if Simon will catch on to him. Once again, so far, the show is still good, with it still feeling like an actor’s journey with some superhero mixed in.
