The fifth episode of The White Lotus season 3, directed and written by Mike White, continues the series’ dive into privilege, personal crises, and destructive pursuits of self-indulgence. This episode has a nice mix of disorderly parties, tense relationships, and new discoveries.
The episode begins with Chloe convincing Saxon, Lochlan, and Chelsea to keep the party going on the yacht. Meanwhile, Laurie, Jaclyn, and Kate head to a club with Valentin and his friends. Chloe encourages her friends to embrace the night and take drugs. Laurie and Jaclyn’s club are confronted by three Russian women who argue with Aleksei and Vlad. The women eventually convince the Russians to join them in the pool, and the men later invite the group to a Muay Thai match. Unbeknownst to Kate and Laurie, Jaclyn sneaks Valentin into her room, where they share a private moment.
Piper struggles to explain her post-graduation plans to her parents and, tells them she wants to stay in Thailand, which shocks them, especially once they find out she never even planned to finish her thesis.
Belinda, in the meantime, is caught in a complicated situation when Fabian informs her about a guest named “Gary,” who is wanted in Italy for his wife’s death. Belinda learns that “Gary” is actually Greg, a man on the run from authorities. Fabian urges Belinda not to involve the police to avoid scandal, but Belinda confides in Pornchai, who promises to protect her. This moment culminates in a kiss that adds a layer of emotional complexity to Belinda’s already fraught position at the resort.
In Bangkok, Rick reconnects with an old friend, Frank, a recovering alcoholic. On the yacht, Chelsea opens up to Chloe about her fears of neglecting her own needs in favor of Rick’s. Their conversation takes a turn when the two share a kiss. Motivated by Chloe, Saxon and Lochlan also share a kiss, further complicating the dynamics within the group.
Timothy, under immense stress, almost attempts to take his own life with the gun he stole from Gaitok. However, he is interrupted by Victoria. After she leaves, Timothy prays to God, seeking guidance on what to do next.
This episode marks an improvement this season, with the characters facing more compelling and dynamic situations. Sam Rockwell’s performance stands out as a highlight. While the episode still struggles with some pacing issues and underdeveloped storylines, it is, without a doubt, the most engaging installment of the season so far.
