Review: ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” Season 2, Episode 2 “Moulin Rouge”

Previously, on the season 2 premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, in France, Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) decided to stay and help the community, rather than return home to America. His dear friend, Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride), begins her journey to find him while meeting someone. Ash (Manish Dayal) decides to help Carol, leaving his home and flying them off on his plane.

The second episode begins with Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi). He understands that he has a reputation to keep, and will have big responsibilities to be accountable for once he grows up. He runs toward Daryl as he returns to the castle with Fallou (Eriq Ebouaney) and Emile (Tristan Zanchi).

Carol and Ash land at a destination in an empty field. Carol’s shooting arrows at walkers, until one comes up from the ground, pulling her down with it. She begins to get attacked by another one until Ash comes up to help her. They fight them off until people from afar shoot the walkers, killing them.

Later, we see Daryl teaching Laurent how to play baseball. Isabelle (Clémence Poésy) joins them in the game as their catcher. Laurent hits the ball far off. As Laurent goes to find it, Isabelle and Daryl talk. He tells her that she and Laurent can leave with him to Alexandria.

We then see Isabelle going to Laurent’s room but finds him missing. Everyone comes together, packing up and leaving to find him. Losang (Joel de la Fuente) makes sure they follow Daryl’s lead, which is a surprise because he doesn’t fully trust him.

Carol and Ash meet the people who saved them; Eun ( Minami) and Hanna (Maria Erwolter). They take the two to their home. Carol decides to stay with Hanna while Eun and Ash go to fix the plane. Hanna reviews Carol’s crossbow while telling her the ingredients for the dinner she’s making. Hanna points it at Carol making her nervous. Hanna admits that she’s supposed to kill her, but she doesn’t want to. Carol asks if Eun is supposed to kill Ash and she says no.

Next, we see Eun asking Ash if he wants more kids after telling her about his son. She tells him that she’s going to make him get her pregnant. He’s shocked, but even more when she tells him it won’t just be her, but Hanna too. Ash ignores her and tells her he needs to leave and get Carol. Before he can start walking away, Eun draws her gun telling him that Hanna is going to kill Carol.

Eun goes back to find Carol still alive as Hanna is still pointing the crossbow at her. Eun pressures Hanna into killing Carol until she points the crossbow at Eun,  and shoots her instead. Carol tells Hanna that she’ll take her with them so they go outside to find Ash.

Ash shoots a flamethrower at Hanna, killing her. Once the two of them get on the plane, Carol asks him if he’s ever killed anyone aside from Hanna, to which he says no. Carol tells him it wasn’t her first when he asks her the same question.

Next, we see Daryl and the group stopping on the road, everyone exiting their vehicles and walking along the road in search of Laurent. They quietly walk inside a building that could be used as a hideout for Marion Genet’s (Anne Charrier) people.

While they’re out there, Sylvie is still at the castle. She sneaks into a building and looks to find out what they’re keeping inside. She finds Laurent there, safe. Losang catches her in the act.

As they’re looking around to find anything to help them figure out what’s going on, Daryl and the search party are ambushed by their own people. It’s revealed Emile hid Laurent for training and plotted to kill Daryl on this mission. However, Fallou and Isabelle tagging along was not planned.

Emile points the gun at Daryl and shoots but misses him as Fallou pushes  Emile’s arm. Isabelle points the gun at Emile. She takes a deep breath before pulling the trigger.

Ash and Carol land at a racetrack. Carol still hasn’t told him that she’s not looking for her daughter. She wants him to stay at the racetrack and let her go on her own. She gives him the crossbow and tells him that if she’s not back in two weeks, he needs to leave.

Carol walks around an abandoned town and hears a truck coming so she hides. She sees a group of soldiers. As the soldiers aren’t looking, she runs over to the back of the truck, where there are crates of food. She finds a bag of rice and rips it, so she’s able to track their location. She finds a community, which happens to be Genet’s. She watches as everyone scrambles for food. Their leader finds Carol as she tries to escape and makes her come with them, stating that, “she’s got guts.”

Back in Paris, Daryl, Fallou, and Isabelle make a plan to go back to the castle. Isabelle tells Daryl that once they get Laurent back, the two of them will come with him. After having a heart-to-heart, the two of them kiss.

At Genet’s, Codron (Romain Levi) is being tortured to reveal Daryl, Laurent, and Isabelle’s location.

Overall, this episode was shocking. Learning that Losang has big plans for Laurent isn’t shocking, but how he’s handling the situation is. Now that Carol is with Genet’s people, how will she find Daryl? How will Daryl and Isabelle get Laurent back?
