Review: ‘The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon’ Season 1, Episode 4 “La Dame de Fer”

Previously, on The Walking Dead; Daryl Dixon, Daryl (Daryl Dixon), Isabelle (Clémence Poséy), Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), and Sylvie (Laïka Blanc-Francard), finally made their way to Paris. They met a new friend, Fallou (Eriq Ebouaney ), who happens to be the leader of a special community. They all were excited to finally meet Laurent, which still raises the question of why he was so special to everyone. Isabelle reunited with Quinn (Adam Nagaitis). But, it wasn’t a positive moment for the two of them. Codron (Romain Levi) found Daryl at Quinn’s club. Both he and Daryl fought against each other, while Daryl was getting shot at by Codron’s men.

Now, the fourth episode “La Dame de Fer” begins with Daryl in a tunnel, on the other side of Laurent, who’s being swarmed by walkers. He’s yelling his name, but Laurent doesn’t say or do anything. The walkers spread away from him as he’s praying. After the scene, it quickly gets revealed that it was a dream. Daryl’s underwater, fighting a walker. He swims up to the top, getting himself out. In the previous episode, the last thing viewers saw was Daryl standing on a building that broke down right underneath him, resulting in him falling.

As Daryl exits, he walks and hides, trying not to have anyone see him. Codron questions a woman who, in the previous episode, was grieving her husband. He questions her about Daryl and Laurent. Genet (Anne Charrier) notices her crying and she keeps looking back at them. She takes the child from the mother and Codron tells her that he’ll find both Daryl and Laurent for her.

Daryl finds the man with the pigeons riding his bike and he stops him. He tells Daryl that he is worried about him and the others. As they’re talking, Daryl hears a truck coming their way, so he has him leave his bike and hide so they don’t get seen. As the men try to take the pigeons, the man goes to them to stop them. They end up killing him and Daryl kills them, taking a weapon of theirs and heading off. He goes back to Isabelle’s community and finds her. He asks her where Laurent was and she doesn’t know.

As the two of them start to look for Laurent, he finds himself looking at the Eiffel Tower. He stares at it and it looks like it could fall at any moment, the top of it bent and worn out. He hears something on the other side of the tower and he looks through a peephole, seeing a walker. He freaks out as he gets swarmed by many of them.

Daryl and Isabelle come at the perfect time and save him. Laurent hides underneath a metal wall panel. As he’s hiding, he gets taken by three men. Daryl grabs a hold of Laurent as he gets grabbed into a car and before he can get him out, the car drives off. Two of the men were still there because Daryl pulled them off of Laurent. He gets tied up and questioned.

The men who took Laurent, work for Quinn. In the next scene, Laurent and Quinn are talking. He asked the boy if he knew anything about him. Laurent tells him that he knew he was a friend of his mother’s and Isabelle’s and that he was also his father. Quinn tells him that he’s safe and he tells him that he “wants to take care” of him and “make up for lost time.”

In the next scene, the man is still getting questioned by Isabelle and Daryl. Daryl punches him and tells him a story of when he was a little boy. Daryl stabs him multiple times in the stomach and basically threatens him to tell him where Laurent is. Isabelle is shocked by all of this, not knowing Daryl could get like that. He finally tells them that Quinn got Laurent to get to Isabelle. The man doesn’t know what it is that he wants, but that it’s Isabelle. He tells them another way inside of the place, but that it’s dangerous.

The man, Isabelle, and Daryl meet up with Fallou, Sylvie, and Emile (Tristan Zanche) to create a plan for getting Laurent back. Daryl is packing up and Isabelle says that she needs to tell him something, but he tells her to wait. He walks away once he’s done. As the group is walking to their boat, Sylvie and Isabelle talk. Sylvie tells her that she likes Emile and that she wants to be a part of the community. Isabelle respects that, because she (Sylvie) never got to live a normal life before becoming a nun.

As they’re planning, Quinn has Genet and Codron meet him at his club. He says that he wants to make a deal with them, more specifically with Genet. He wants Daryl. She tells him that she can have him, but what he doesn’t know is that she won’t keep her word. Daryl killed Codron’s brother, so he’ll have him, not Quinn. Quinn lies to them about Laurent, stating that he will keep looking for him.

Daryl and the man go through the tunnel as Emile and some of the people in their group shoot at the guards. Emile gets shot and Fallou throws flame throwers at them. Daryl leaves the man and goes in through a door, reaching inside the club. He hides behind the bar. Daryl finds Laurent, who’s sitting with Anna (Lukerya Ilyashenko). She tells them to go and she has a smile on her face when they leave. Quinn comes back and looks for Laurent, only to be met with Daryl standing across from him. The two men fight and before Daryl kills him, he stops, not wanting Laurent to see, but he does knock him out.

The episode has a sad, but bittersweet ending. Isabelle tells Daryl that he should leave and go back to America. Daryl tells her that she needs to go with him, but she tells him no. Laurent asks when he’ll see her again. It’s a sad goodbye, Sylvie and Isabelle watching as their boat drives off. It seems like a farewell, but it isn’t. Isabelle goes back to Quinn.
