Review: ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3, Episode 9 “Last Call”

Previously on Prime’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, after being MIA before his wedding, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) breaks things off with Belly (Lola Tung) after realizing that she’ll always love Conrad (Christopher Briney). Belly goes to the airport to catch a flight back home, but makes a quick decision to fly to Paris instead.

The episode begins with Belly at the airport waiting to board her flight, and as she’s in line, she sees Conrad. She contemplates going over to him, but decides not to. While Conrad’s sitting down, Adam (Tom Everett Scott) calls him. Conrad learns that the wedding was called off. Adam asks him to talk to Jeremiah to see what’s going on.

Jeremiah, Steven (Sean Kaufman), Denise (Isabella Briggs), and Jeremiah’s friends are at a bar. Denise and Steven are concerned that Jeremiah is drinking too much. Taylor (Rain Spencer) comes over to talk to Steven. The two of them notice Conrad through the window, and so they walk to him to make sure Jeremiah doesn’t see him. Taylor makes Steven go back inside, and Taylor talks to Conrad alone. Even though he wants to help his brother, Taylor tells him that he’s not what Jeremiah needs right now. She also tells him that Belly wants some space from everyone. She lets him know that she’ll notify him when she does hear from Belly.

Steven, Taylor, and Jeremiah go back to the hotel suite and find a note that was supposed to be for Jeremiah and Belly. Jeremiah reads it and gets upset. Taylor makes Jeremiah sober up and go to bed.

Next, we see Belly on her flight to Paris. She’s still wearing her engagement ring. She takes it off and places it in her bag. When she lands, she’s in line to take out her passport when the ring falls off. She finds it and leaves the airport. As she arrives in the city, she goes to the University and finds out she missed the deadline. The program is full, which means she can’t get her spot back. She leaves and begins to cry. She calls Laurel (Jackie Chung). Laurel tells her to book a flight back home. After their phone call, Belly finds a cafe and orders some food. When she goes to pay for her meal, she turns around and notices her backpack is missing. She freaks out and begins to track it with her phone. Belly’s tracker is on a bus, so she heads to the station, waiting for its next stop.

Laurel goes to the inn to check in on Jeremiah. He’s upset with her and starts to take his anger out on her. She tries to talk to him, but he slams the door in her face.

Steven goes to the summer house to grab Jeremiah’s clothes for him, since Conrad’s staying there. Like Jeremiah does to Laurel, Steven also takes his anger out on someone: Conrad. He tells him to leave Jeremiah alone, saying that no one cares about Conrad’s feelings, even if he’s just trying to help.

Belly finds the location of her backpack at a club, but the guards won’t let her enter the building. As she’s walking around, she notices a woman in trouble, so she pretends to know her. The girl’s name is Gemma (Corinna Brown). She introduces herself to Belly as they enter the club. Gemma joins her friends on the second floor while Belly frantically looks for her backpack. Luckily, she spots a guy holding it and gets it back.

Taylor tells Steven about Jeremiah cheating on Belly with Lacie in Cabo. He gets upset that he’s been having Jeremiah’s back, meanwhile, he cheated on his sister. The two of them decide to give their relationship a chance, falling back in love with each other all over again.

Gemma and her friends take Belly out for dinner. She tells them about the wedding, which shocks them. Gemma tells her she should stay there for a little while, but Belly is undecided. While she’s on the bus, she calls Jeremiah. She tells him that she’s in Paris, taking space from everyone. Jeremiah wants things to go back to how they were as a couple, but Belly knows that that’s not a good idea. She decides to stay in Paris so she can figure out who she is without him. Jeremiah gets upset and hangs up.

At the summer house, Conrad comes downstairs only to find Jeremiah in the kitchen, staring at a picture from their mom’s collection, which Conrad was going to give Jeremiah as a wedding gift. Conrad tells him that he’s at the house to be there for him, but Jeremiah doesn’t believe him. Jeremiah tells him that Belly’s in Paris and that she’s not coming back. He tells him, “She didn’t choose me, but she didn’t pick you either.” He then tells him to leave the house and go back to California.

After their talk, Conrad meets Adam to talk about Jeremiah. Adam asks how he’s doing, but Conrad tells him that his brother doesn’t want to talk to him. Conrad admits that he’s the one who ruined the wedding. Conrad wants to give up on trying to be there for his brother, but Adam tells him just to give him space. Conrad leaves Cousins, and Adam goes to the house to be there for Jeremiah.

Overall, this was a good episode. It’s relieving to finally see Taylor and Steven back together. Understandably, Jeremiah is upset, but he is the one who called the wedding off. What will happen now that Belly has decided to stay in Paris?
