Review: ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3, Episode 8 “Last Kiss”

Previously on Prime’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) had their bachelorette and bachelor parties, where Taylor (Rain Spencer) acted as Steven’s (Sean Kaufman) wingwoman for Denise (Isabelle Briggs). And Belly and Conrad (Christopher Briney) argue after he finds out Jeremiah cheated on Belly during spring break.

The episode begins with Conrad confronting Belly about their interaction the previous night. He wants to apologize, but Belly is irritated, stating he’s playing with her emotions. He confesses she broke his heart, and she lies about her feelings toward him. She tells him not to come to the wedding.

Taylor talks with Conrad about Belly. She knows that he’s the reason Belly cried herself to sleep last night. She asks about what he said to her, but he doesn’t say anything. She tells him, “Do the right thing and leave her alone.”

Later, John (Colin Ferguson) and Laurel meet Belly at the Country Club for the wedding rehearsal. After the rehearsal, everyone has dinner. Belly feels awkward with Conrad’s presence. She and Jeremiah make a toast, thanking everyone for their support. Here, Belly finds out that Jeremiah accepted a job offer from Adam without telling her. He tells her that if she doesn’t want him to do it, then he won’t. She lies, telling him it’s okay.

After the dinner, Conrad is at the house alone when Laurel comes to sit with him in the backyard. She knows that he’s having a hard time with the wedding. She tells him, “You’ll get through it, I promise. And I’m here for you.”

Late at night, Belly tells Jeremiah how Conrad expressed his feelings toward her.   They tell each other that they don’t want to lose the other. She sleeps with him for the night.

In the morning, Steven comes to get Belly ready, and they discover Jeremiah is missing. She tells Steven about Jeremiah and Conrad. Upset, he tells her that he’ll find Jeremiah. On his way out, he runs into Conrad and tells him to fix things and find his brother.

Conrad finds Jeremiah, who wants to be left alone. Conrad confronts him about Cabo, and they begin to fight. To diffuse the situation, Conrad hands Jeremiah the letter from their mother.  But it only makes Jeremiah angrier, telling  Conrad that he’s dead to him and not to come to the wedding. Conrad realizes the letter is addressed to him, not Jeremiah.

Taylor tells Belly that she doesn’t think she should go through with marrying Jeremiah. Taylor is concerned that Belly is putting Jeremiah over everyone, including herself. Belly takes her anger out on Taylor, saying hateful things before Steven intervenes. Before leaving the room, Taylor tells Belly to figure out what she really wants before time runs out.

Conrad apologizes to Belly for everything that happened. He acknowledges that he hurt her and made everything worse. He tells her that he’s not staying for the wedding. Shortly after he leaves the room, Jeremiah comes in. He asks her if she still loves Conrad, and she freezes, saying yes. She tells him that Conrad doesn’t matter and that she chose him. He confronts her about Christmas and the summer house, and they argue. Belly tried to convince Jeremiah she’s all for him, but he knows it isn’t true.

The wedding is called off. Belly packs her things and takes one last look at the house before leaving. She goes to the airport and makes a quick decision to go to Paris. While in line, she sees Conrad sitting down.

Overall, this was a really good episode, filled with a lot of drama. Christopher Briney, Lola Tung, and Gavin Casalegno did a wonderful job, using their characters’ emotions and making them even more compelling. It’s not easy to watch Conrad make himself suffer, along with Belly, too. Although Jeremiah was hurt, he shouldn’t have left Belly like that before the wedding. With Belly seeing Conrad at the airport, can they have a chance to start over again?
