Previously on Prime’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) try to talk to Laurel (Jackie Chung) about their wedding, but Laurel still doesn’t agree with their decision, choosing not to support them fully. After Belly and Laurel get into an argument, she and Jeremiah go to the house in Cousins and stay there, only to find Conrad. Conrad and Steven are both asked to be Jeremiah’s best men, and both agree.
The episode begins with Conrad reminiscing about the moment he told Belly he accepted being Jeremiah’s best man. His father, Adam, calls, trying to get information about the wedding, but Conrad says he doesn’t know anything.
Belly’s in the kitchen, eating a Poptart when Conrad enters. There’s awkward tension between them.
Next, we see Jeremiah and Steven (Sean Kaufman) at work. Jeremiah thinks that Steven’s been flirting with Denise (Isabella Briggs), but Steven brushes it off. Steven still has feelings for Taylor, which Jeremiah knows. Steven just doesn’t want to admit it. After work, Steven leaves for New York for a gaming conference, only to discover Denise is headed to the same conference.
Conrad has a flashback to when they were all kids, teaching Belly how to ride a bike without the training wheels.
Belly decides to do some wedding shopping, but discovers the price for a cake and flowers is expensive. She tries calling Jeremiah, but he’s at work. While in the city, she runs into Conrad, who gives her a ride back home. After hearing her dilemma, he offers to use flowers from their garden for the wedding. Jeremiah calls Belly back, and she tries to explain that they can’t afford the cake and flowers, but he doesn’t understand. She gets emotional telling Conrad that she feels like she’s doing all of the planning by herself.
Adam and Jeremiah are still at the office. Adam tells Jeremiah that he has his support with the wedding. Jeremiah tells him that it will be at the house, but Adam says that he’ll pay for a venue.
On their way to Michaels for the discount sale, Conrad and Belly talk about her college plans. She tells him that she wants to study sports psychology. He tells her that he’s been seeing a therapist. They both realize how much they’ve changed and grown up. They leave the store once they find some decorations and head back home. While in the car, Conrad tells her the truth about him being home for the summer: He got fired. She tells him not to beat himself up about it.
Back at the house, Conrad has a flashback while preparing dinner. The last time he spent the night at the Conklins, his mom wasn’t doing that well. Belly snuck into his room and the two of them shared an intimate moment. Now, Conrad wishes that things had never changed between them. He loses focus of his memory as Jeremiah comes into the house. Jeremiah tells them that Adam is going to be supportive, which shocks Conrad. After feeling awkward around the couple, Conrad leaves the kitchen, going upstairs.
Jeremiah tells Belly that Adam’s going to pay for the wedding. Belly seems a little bummed out, wanting to do everything by themselves. When she finds out that Adam not only wants to do the wedding elsewhere but also invite people from his company, Belly gets frustrated and confused. She tells Jeremiah, “Our wedding isn’t about your dad’s business, it’s about us.”
Before Conrad goes to bed, he has another flashback. This time it’s of him and his mom, Susannah (Rachel Blanchard). He visits her in the hospital, talking to her as she’s slowly dying. She reminisces about when he was a baby. She tells him that she’s not scared to die because she knows that her boys will be okay. He tells her he’s not ready for her to go. He promised Susannah that he’d always take care of Jeremiah, that he’d always be there for him.
Overall, this was a good episode. It was really nice to see Belly and Conrad hanging out together. Christopher Briney does a great job as Conrad, and it was nice to hear the narration of Conrad’s thoughts and feelings throughout the episode. Conrad still isn’t over Belly, and who knows when or if those feelings will ever disappear. With the wedding planning, Belly’s having to compromise on everything, wanting to cater to Jeremiah’s wants instead of hers. What will happen now that Adam will be involved with the wedding?
