Review: ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3, Episode 4 “Last Stand”

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Previously on Prime’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) told their families that they’re engaged. Conrad (Christopher Briney) reunites with his family and Belly, having an awkward interaction at the boys’ mom’s foundation event. Taylor (Rain Spencer) crashes out on her mom, Lucinda (Kristen Connolly), after finding out that she’s been going to Steven (Sean Kaufman) for financial advice. But once Taylor’s mom clarifies and tells her what’s going on, Taylor forgives her and decides to help.

The episode begins with Belly painting her nails on her birthday. She gets a call from Jeremiah, who’s at work. He tells her that his dad left a pacifier on his desk. Everyone thinks that Belly’s pregnant because of how quickly they got engaged after breaking up. Belly tells him that her family is still upset about the engagement, not fully accepting or wanting to talk about it.

During breakfast, Belly asks Laurel (Jackie Chung) if she can go wedding dress shopping with her, and Laurel says she can’t. She doesn’t want to, so Belly leaves abruptly, feeling hurt.

Jeremiah is interning at his father’s company, where Steven works. His dad, Adam (Tom Everett Scott), is giving him a hard time as well, not wanting to hear about wedding plans or anything regarding Belly. Kayleigh (Emma Ishta) compliments Jeremiah on his attire, and as she walks away, fellow internee Denise (Isabella Briggs) mocks her, teasing Jeremiah. Kayleigh overhears and gives her a chore. Steven goes to the kitchen and tells Denise to leave Jeremiah alone. Jeremiah asks Steven to be his co-best man, and he freaks out, excited.

Taylor and Lucinda are working on their financial plan for the salon, as well as other bills they need to pay. Belly calls, asking if Taylor wants to go dress shopping with her. Lucinda overhears, telling Belly that they’ll go with. They go shopping, and Taylor feels bad that Laurel isn’t there. She tries to give her some advice. Belly tries on some dresses. They find one dress that really fits her, and Taylor gets emotional.

While on the phone with Jeremiah, Belly gets emotional, not having the support of Laurel. Jeremiah encourages her, saying that she’ll come through.

At night, Jeremiah surprises Belly with a birthday cake. He gifts her a key to the house in Cousins. He gives Laurel a bouquet, wanting to speak with her. The three of them sit down and talk. Jeremiah tells her that he’s lucky to have Belly, saying that they’re ready for the next step. Laurel still won’t change her mind, saying that they’re too young and aren’t ready for this kind of commitment. Laurel believes that Belly doesn’t know who she truly wants: Jeremiah or Conrad. Laurel says that if they choose to go through with the wedding, then she won’t be there. After yelling at each other, Belly and Jeremiah leave the house and go to the summer house.

Belly wakes up on the couch and sees Conrad. Jeremiah wakes up shortly and is surprised to find him there. Belly tells Conrad that Jeremiah is interning for their dad, which catches him by surprise. Belly decides to stay at the house for the time being.

While on his run, Conrad gets a phone call from Agnes (Zoé de Grand’Maison). He tells her that Jeremiah and Belly are there. After his run, he and Jeremiah go surfing to talk. Jeremiah asks him to be his co-best man as well, and Conrad doesn’t say anything. Conrad does mention that if Adam and Laurel are on the same page about the wedding, then they’re probably right. Conrad agrees that they’re too young and it’s too soon. Jeremiah is upset that he doesn’t support it.

Later, Belly’s dad, John (Colin Ferguson), goes over to Laurel’s, frustrated that he finds out Belly left home through a text message. Laurel tells him that she told Belly she wouldn’t be at the wedding, and that makes John even more upset. John says that it’s Belly’s life and she needs to learn from her mistakes, expressing that she needs to let Belly grow up and make her own decisions.

Taylor and Steven are on the phone, discussing Lucinda’s finances. Steven says that she won’t be able to get a loan from a bank. Steven found out that some credit lines were created by Lucinda’s ex, using her name. By the end of the month, Lucinda needs to be able to pay everything off to receive a loan and fix her credit.

Belly has a flashback to when she was a little girl. She and Laurel spent their summer at Cousins, and Susannah created a bedroom made just for her. She gets scared in the middle of the night, and Laurel sleeps in the bed with her. After the flashback, Belly lies down in that same bed and begins to cry. Conrad is packing and walks to say goodbye to Belly, but he hears her crying. He peeks through the bedroom door and stands there before walking away.

Jeremiah texts Belly, letting her know that he talked to Conrad, and he agreed to be the other best man. Belly rushes downstairs, seeing Conrad in the kitchen. He tells her that he had a change of heart.

Overall, although it was slow, there was a lot of drama in the episode. Between Lucinda’s financial struggles and Jeremiah and Belly’s family being upset with the engagement, a lot is going on between everyone. Lola Tung is amazing at portraying Belly’s emotions, having real moments of being overwhelmed and wanting the old relationship she had with Laurel. Even though Conrad agreed to be Jeremiah’s best man, it’s obvious he’s only doing it so that he and Belly will be happy. What will happen in the next episode?
