Review: ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3, Episode 2 “Last Christmas”

Previously on Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, Belly (Lola Tung) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno) began their new chapter in college together. Belly is accepted into a Paris study abroad program but hesitates to share the news, while Jeremiah hides the fact that he slept with someone else during a brief breakup during the summer. When the truth comes out, Belly automatically breaks up with him. Steven (Sean Kaufman) and Taylor (Rain Spencer) are sneaking around while being in separate relationships. Meanwhile, Conrad (Christopher Briney), now in medical school and attending therapy, is still not over Belly and his heartbreak.

The episode begins with Belly lying in bed, crying as she has a flashback to the events involving Jeremiah. Their argument about his trip to Cabo, their making up, and his reveal that he cheated on her. Back in the present time, Belly looks at her phone and sees Jeremiah’s been calling and texting non-stop. Taylor, worried about her best friend, goes to check on her, but Belly is avoiding everyone. Belly goes to the library with her roommate, and it’s clear how sad she is. She can’t help but think about him while she’s there, memories appearing everywhere.

Jeremiah’s talking to one of his fraternity brothers about Belly. He feels guilty about not telling her as soon as he got back from the trip. He tells him that losing her has made him lose a part of himself.

Later, we see Belly walking, and she notices Jeremiah outside. She tries to avoid him, but he stops her from walking away. He apologizes and promises that he won’t keep any more secrets from her. He admits that he’s cheated on her twice. She tells him that he’s the one person who’s hurt her the most.

While hanging out, Steven tells Taylor that he broke up with his girlfriend. He wants them to have a new start, although she doesn’t feel the same. She yells at him and begs him to let her out of the car. She slams the door, and as Steven turns the car around, he gets hit. Taylor calls Belly, who immediately heads to the hospital.

Taylor holds herself responsible for the accident. Taylor walks away to get in touch with Belly’s parents, Conrad, and Jeremiah. She contacts Conrad and informs him of the situation. Conrad is busy when she calls, but he still answers the phone while he and Agnes (Zoé de Grand’Maison) are at the hospital for their new job. Since the doctor isn’t giving them a clear explanation of what’s happening, he informs her that he will ask around to learn more about Steven. Conrad asks his boss if she can call to check out what’s going on, and she agrees.

Belly goes to the vending machine and sees Jeremiah in the lobby. He’s sitting there so that he can be close, but not too close, because he doesn’t want Belly to feel uncomfortable. A doctor comes over to the girls and lets them know that she’ll be taking over Steven’s case, thanks to Conrad and his supervisor. She then takes them to Steven’s room.

Conrad and Agnes are doing lab work, and he makes a mistake. The doctor ends up firing him, leaving him helpless and confused.

In the morning, Belly calls Laurel (Jackie Chung), who answers while oversleeping with her ex-husband, John (Colin Ferguson). Laurel lets her know that she’ll tell John, and they will hurry to the hospital. Laurel feels guilty that she and John were together and never once noticed Belly and Taylor’s phone calls from the night before.

After the phone call, Belly gets a text from Conrad, asking about Steven. She has a flashback from Christmas last year at Cousins. It’s just the two of them there at the house. Conrad makes a joke about chocolate all over her face. He ends up going to bed for the night. When she wakes up the next morning, she rushes downstairs, falling and hurting herself, not realizing Conrad’s still there. They spend the day together.

The scene then goes back to the present day. Belly and Taylor go to Steven’s room, and then Belly lets Taylor speak with him alone. He tells her that he was right about them not “working.” Taylor’s face doesn’t agree, but she tells him that they’re on the same page.

In the hallway, Belly lets Jeremiah know that Steven’s awake and that he’s going to be okay. They go outside, and he apologizes to her. She tells him she’s still mad at him. The two decide to start over as a couple. Jeremiah proposes to her, and she says yes.

Overall, this was an interesting episode. Watching Rain Spencer as Taylor has been showcased differently in this episode, with many different emotions flooding in from the argument she had with Steven to the aftermath of the accident. Viewers haven’t seen so much emotion from her toward another person, other than with Belly. Although Belly did get cheated on, deciding to stay with Jeremiah and also becoming his fiancée says a lot about how much she believes in them as a couple. What will happen when everyone finds out? Will Conrad make a trip there to be there for Steven, or will he continue to avoid everyone?
